The Lindenwood men's volleyball team lost in four sets to Hope International (Calif) this afternoon, wrapping up a 2-2 finish at the Lindenwood Invitational.
Despite bouncing back to even the match at one game apiece after two, Hope International would stymie the Lions the rest of the way, winning 30-23, 23-30, 30-26, 30-26. Taylor Morrill and Matt Schmack paced the Lions with 14 kills apiece. Tim Huizinga finished with 13 and Mike Warren added 11. Mike Larson tallied 42 assists and Raphael Mattos converted three aces. Andrew Hock netted eight digs for Lindenwood.
Earlier in the day, the Lions would prevail over St. Ambrose (Iowa) 30-25, 36-34, 30-26. Morrill and Schmack each had a team-high 15 kills and Warren also finished in double-figures with 11. Larson recorded 46 assists and Mike Emerick added eight digs. Schmack led the team in blocks with six and Jack Mitchell had five.
On Friday, Lindenwood opened the tournament with a sweep of Holy Names (Calif.), before falling to California Baptist in the night cap.
Lindenwood made quick work of Holy Names, winning by scores of 30-17, 30-21, 30-23. Morrill paced the Lions with 12 kills and Rick Hess added eight. Mitchell came off the bench to chip in with seven. Larson recorded 27 assists and a team-high three aces. Emerick had 12 digs and Evan Bruton finished with three blocks.
In a rematch of last year's national championship match, California Baptist earned a measure of revenge, sweeping Lindenwood 30-28, 30-23, 30-26. Hess was productive in the middle for the Lions recording 12 kills and Morrill added nine. Three other Lions finished with seven apiece. Larson netted 41 assists and Emerick had a team-high 15 digs.
Lindenwood (3-4, 1-1) will host Milwaukee School of Engineering this Friday at 7 p.m.
