In a battle of ranked teams No. 8 William Jewell upended No. 22 Lindenwood in double overtime 2-1 Saturday night at Harlen C. Hunter Stadium.
The visiting Cardinals got on the scoreboard first just 19 minutes into the game when Brett Lewis scored off a free kick taken by Justin Beck. The game would stay 1-0 heading into the halftime break.
As the second half began Radomir Papric was given his second yellow card of the night, which resulted in the Lions having to play with just 10 men for the remaining 38 minutes of regulation. That did not stop the Lions from keeping the pressure on and tying the game when Axel Duarte scored in the 80th minute.The game would stay tied and head into overtime.
Both teams had chances in the first extra frame but neither was able to end the game. As the second overtime was nearing conclusion Troy Green of William Jewell would break the tie with just over a minute to play and give the visitors the 2-1 win.
Victor Francoz started in net for the Lions and stopped 12 shots and made numerous key saves keeping the Lions within striking distance. There was plenty of whistles in the game also, as the two teams combined for 38 fouls and six cards.
With the loss the Lions fall to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Next up will be a non-conference game on Wednesday night in St. Charles against Missouri Baptist.
