The Lindenwood men's basketball team used good long distance shooting and strong second half defense to defeat local rival Maryville by a 76-53 score on Thursday night at Hyland Arena.
The Lions made 11 of 22 three-pointers on the night, including seven in the first half when they ran out to a 40-30 lead. The big difference in the half was a 9-0 run by Lindenwood late in the period that included five points from
Kramer Soderberg and four from
Richard Rose.
In the second 20 minutes, Lindenwood stepped up its defensive effort, only allowing 23 points for the period and holding Maryville to 41.7 percent shooting from the field. The Saints never cut the lead into single digits for the half and Lindenwood led by as much as 26.
Lindenwood was led by the duo of Soderberg and
Michael Boos. Soderberg had 19 points and Boos scored 17. The two combined to shoot nine of 11 from beyond the arc. Rose added 10 points and had two three-pointers.
David King and
Brett Thompson each scored eight points.
The Lions dominated the boards by a 36-19 margin. King led the way with seven rebounds, one more than Thompson. Lindenwood only allowed two offensive rebounds and grabbed 13 of its own rebounds.
Lindenwood had a season-high 17 assists, seven more than its first two games combined. Soderberg dished out seven of those assists.
Lindenwood improves to 2-1 on the season. The Lions will host Concordia Seminary on Friday night at 7 p.m.
