Storyline
As the season continues to roll on the Lions will look to keep improving its standings in the HAAC. With three wins last week in conference play the team has evened it's league mark.
This week the team will have another opportunity to move up the standings with four games against conference foes.
First up will be a home match-up against MidAmerica Nazarene and then the team will go on the road for the first time this month with a pair of games against William Jewell. They will close the week with a doubleheader against McKendree.
Last Week's Results
The Lions would go 3-1 last week after splitting two games with Graceland and sweeping a pair of games from Baker.
In game one of the week against Graceland the Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning but the Yellowjackets cut into the lead by scoring single tallies in the fifth and the sixth. With the Lions leading by a single run in the final inning Lindenwood would erupt for six runs and the 9-2 win.
The final game of the doubleheader started with Lindenwood taking a 3-0 lead going into the fourth inning. Graceland would cut into the lead with a run in the fourth and would tie the game in the fifth with two runs.
After the Yellowjackets tied the game, Lindenwood would answer with three runs in the sixth to take a 6-3 lead. The Lindenwood bullpen could not hold the lead as they would hit two hitters and the defense would commit a costly error to give Graceland the win.
Next up for the Lions was Baker and they would get their conference record back even with a two game sweep of the visiting Baker Wildcats. The Lions won game one 4-2 and the second 13-5.
In the opening game of the double header the Lions jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Baker would tie the score in the fourth via a two run home run.
The game would stay tied to the bottom of the sixth inning. Lindenwood would eventually load the bases with no outs.
Cody Anderson would come to the plate with two outs and he delivered with a two out single to give the Lions the lead that they would hold onto for the win.
The final game of the doubleheader was a slugfest. The teams combined for 18 runs and 18 hits. Lindenwood would jump out to a 7-0 lead after two innings but Baker would score two in the top of the third. The Lions would answer right back with two more in the third, four in the fifth and roll to a 13-5 win.
Going The Distance
Already this season the team has four complete games.
Zach Malawey leads the team with two, while
Evan Vinyard and
Randy Serrato each have one. A year ago the Lions compiled nine complete games.
Piling Up The K's
The Lindenwood pitching staff is racking up the strikeouts in quick fashion. The staff has struckout 176 hitters, which is the eighth most in the country.
Starters
Evan Vinyard and Zach Malaway have combined for 94 strikeouts. Vinyard is third in the country with 50 and Malawey is fifth with 44.
Milestone
When the team beat Harris-Stowe earlier this season head coach
Doug Bletcher won his 100th game at the helm of the Lindenwood program. He has compiled a record of 103-41-1 in his three years at the school.
Finishing Off Leads
Leading after five innings has been a key to the Lions success this season. The team is 17-1 when they have the lead after six innings.
Errorless Baseball
When the team has committed one or no errors they are 15-1. On the contrary if they commit two or more they have a record of 3-7.
Scoring Early
Scoring in the first inning has been very productive for the Lions this season. When the team scores in the first inning the team is 8-2. They have out-scored their opponents 17-7 in first innings.
Goin' Deep
Shelby Anderson has started the 2010 season showing some major power. In 26 games, the junior has connected on eight bombs, which is the third most in the country.
HAAC Champs
For the second consecutive year the Lions were the HAAC Champs. In 2009 they complied a 32-8 conference record and also won four straight games in the conference tournament to be crowned the tourney champs.
Rankings
The 2009 season ended with the Lions being ranked 15th and at the start of the 2010 season they are ranked 12th which is the highest of any HAAC school.
The Andersons
Shelby and
Cody Anderson have started the season on fire.
Cody Anderson is hitting a team leading .416 with two home runs and 15 RBIs.
Shelby Anderson has hit eight home runs, which ranks him third in the country, drove in 25 runs and, is hitting .329.
Up Next
Lindenwood will once again have a busy week. The week will start off with the Lions taking on the Avila Eagles on the road and then they will come back home to take on Evangel for four games. They will close out the week with a non-conference road game against McKendree.
