Storyline
Lindenwood will turn the page this week as its focus shifts to conference play. Eight of the next 10 home games will be against HAAC opponents, and will give the Lady Lions a chance to get off to a great start in league play.
The Lady Lions finished third in the conference last season with a 14-6 record. The team was picked to finish in the same place in 2010.
Lindenwood will first play Evangel on Thursday for a pair of games, and then host Baker on Friday. The Lady Lions wrap up the week against MidAmerica Nazarene.
Last Week's Results
The Lady Lions stumbled through last week, dropping four straight before rebounding on Sunday with a pair of wins.
Lindenwood opened the week falling to Columbia College in the Cougars' final at-bats in both contests.
The Cougars scored all their runs in the seventh to knock off Lindenwood 3-1 in game one.
Heidi Schertzer took the loss, pitching six spotless innings before running into trouble in the seventh.
Danielle Merli had an RBI triple.
Game two went to extra innings, and the Cougars prevailed 2-1.
Chelsea Landeck collected a pair of hits and
Katie Wessel had the lone RBI.
On Saturday, No. 17 St. Xavier swept Lindenwood. In the first game, the visitors edged the Lady Lions 5-4.
Kimberly Ruth posted two hits and drove in a run in defeat.
The Cougars rallied past Lindenwood in game two, winning 5-3. Ruth complied two hits once again, and
Jessica Long finished with a RBI.
The Lady Lions snapped their four game losing streak on Sunday with 10-2 and 9-1 wins over Blackburn.
In game one,
Emily Johnson had two hits and drove in three runs to lead the Lady Lions. Schertzer tossed a one hitter, fanning four.
Bailee Winkler powered Lindenwood to a win in game two, connecting on the team's first homerun of the season.
Overdue
Lindenwood went without a homerun through the first 13 games of the season, but that changed when
Bailee Winkler had a tape-measure shot in the team's second game against Blackburn. In comparison, the Lady Lions had five homeruns through 14 games last year.
Breaking Out
Prior to the doubleheader against Blackburn, the Lady Lions had scored more than three runs just four times this year. The team scored 19 runs in the two games and hit .441 with runners on base. Lindenwood also had a season-high 11 hits in its 9-1 win over Blackburn.
Go Long
Jessica Long, the team's regular clean-up hitter, is currently on an eight-game hitting streak. She has driven in eight runs in the last seven games and leads the team in multiple RBI games with three. Long is hitting .375 on the season with runners in scoring position, and has driven in four runs with two outs remaining, also tops on the team.
Missing Bats
Lindenwood ranks 22nd in the nation in batters struck out per game with a 6.5 average.
Aubrey Moss individually ranks in the Top 50 in batters struck out per nine innings with an 11.1 average.
Leading Off
Lady Lion hitters are reaching base 47 percent of the time when leading off an inning.
Sam Van Pelt leads the squad with five hits when leading off Lindenwood's half of the frame and four others have at least four hits. In comparison, opposing teams' leadoff hitters are reaching just 33 percent of the time.
Highway Robbery
Lindenwood has stolen 27 bases on the year so far. That mark is third best in the conference, and team-leader
Jacqueline Riordan is tied for fourth in the HAAC with seven swipes.
Foreshadowing
The Lady Lions are 4-1 when leading after five innings, compared to 0-7 when trailing or tied with their opponents after five.
Scouting Evangel
The Crusaders have rebounded after starting the seasn 1-5, winning six of their last seven games.
Evangel won the HAAC regular season championship last year with a 17-3 record.
The team ranks 16th in the country in stolen bases per game in 2010 with a 2.3 average, and are led by Sarah Doyle who has a team-high 12 swipes.
Evangel is led by Jerry Breaux who in is his 16th year at the school. He has led the Crusaders to 10 HAAC titles.
Scouting Midamerica Nazarene
The Pioneers are off to one of the best starts in the country, having won 17 of their first 19 games. During one stretch, the team rattled off 12 straight victories.
MidAmerica Nazarene is led by a dominant pitching staff and a powerful offense. The team ranks third in the NAIA in batters struck out per game (10.0) and total strikeouts (170).
Offensively, the Pioneers rank fifth in the country in homeruns per game (1.18) and ninth in slugging percentage (.547).
The Pioneers are coached by Steve Babinski who is in his sixth year with the program.
Scouting Baker
The Wildcats are currently 6-10 on the season, and are 2-2 in their last four games.
At the plate, Baker is led by Brooke Allen who has posted a team-high 23 hits. She also leads the team in runs scored. Kelsey Epperson has a team-best eight RBIs, and both Epperson and Katie Worley have two homeruns apiece.
Heather Gruber is the team's top pitcher. She has recorded 43 strikeouts on the year and has a team-high five wins.
Baker is led by first-year head coach Matt Windle.

Lindenwood will conclude its homestand next week with games against McKendree and William Jewell, and will then hit the road for four games in Alabama.
