The Lindenwood softball team evened up its conference record on Friday afternoon with a sweep over visiting Baker. The Lady Lions entertained the Lou Brock Sports Complex crowd with 6-0 and 6-2 victories over the Wildcats.
The first game saw pitcher
Heidi Schertzer overpower the Baker hitters with a three-hit shutout. She retired the first 12 batters of the game before scattering a single in each of the last three innings. The biggest jam she got into was having runners on third and second in the fifth inning, but she got out of it with a strikeout. Schertzer finished seven strikeouts and just one walk.
Offensively,
Jodi Urhahn led the Lady Lions with two hits, three RBIs and a run. She had the game-winning RBI in the second with a two-out single. Lindenwood scored two more times in the third before Urhahn's speed help manufacture a run in the fourth. After reaching on a fielder's choice she advanced to third on a wild pitch, stole third, and then scored on
Caitlin Diesen's single. Urhahn sealed her big game with a two-run single in the fifth.
Samantha Van Pelt had three hits and a run, and
Danielle Merli had two hits and two runs.
Sophie Berman and Diesen both had two hits and a run.
In the second game, Lindenwood won with a power offense. The Lady Lions had six extra base hits, including homers by
Jessica Long and Berman.
Long's two-run homer put Lindenwood up 2-0 in the third inning. Baker scored once in the fourth, but the Lady Lions put three on the board in their half of the inning. Long again had the big hit with a two-run double. Berman's homer added an insurance run in the fifth inning.
Van Pelt had three more hits, and Long and Diesen had multi-hit games as well in the second contest.
Kimberly Ruth scored two times.
Rebecca Peddicord picked up her first win of the season, throwing a complete game and having a line of allowing two runs, three walks, nine hits, and striking out five.
Lindenwood improves to 8-10 overall and 2-2 in HAAC action with the doubleheader sweep.
