Storyline
The Lindenwood softball team got off to a great start in conference play last week and will look to build on that during its upcoming stretch.
Since falling to St. Xavier, the Lady Lions have posted six wins to two losses and are averaging better than seven runs per game.
Lindenwood will begin the week hosting Avila on Tuesday and William Jewell on Thursday. The Lady Lions will then travel to Mobile, Ala. for their annual Spring Break trip. They have games scheduled against Spring Hill and No. 18 Mobile.
Last Week's Results
Lindenwood posted a 4-2 record last week while opening conference play.
The Lady Lions began the week hosting Evangel in their conference opener.
Evangel swept Lindenwood 7-3 and 4-2.
Caitlin Diesen had a pair of hits in game one and
Samantha Van Pelt collected an RBI.
Despite getting a two-run homerun from
Jessica Long, the Lady Lions could not generate enough offense and lost the second game 4-2.
Lindenwood responded with a sweeps of Baker and MidAmerica Nazarene over the weekend.
Heidi Schertzer tossed a three-hit shutout in 6-0 win over Baker.
Jodi Urhahn paced the offense with two hits and three RBIs. Van Pelt logged three hits as well.
The Lady Lions overpowered the Wildcats in game two, winning 6-2. Long had another two-run shot and
Sophie Berman connected on her first homerun of the year.
Rebecca Peddicord broke through for her first win of the season.
Lindenwood swept MidAmerica Nazarene to wrap up the week.
Sophia Galati had back-to-back three-run homeruns to help Lindenwood in an 11-3 game one victory.
Aubrey Moss struck out 13 Pioneers to grab the win.
Game two was an offensive affair as the Lady Lions edged the Pioneers 12-11. Galati added another two-run homerun and
Katie Wessel compiled four RBIs.
Power Surge
After totaling one homerun through their first 14 games, the Lady Lions belted seven last week.
Jessica Long had two-run homeruns against both Evangel and Baker, and
Sophie Berman added a solo shot against Baker as well.
Sophia Galati ended the week with a bang, crushing three homeruns against MidAmerica.
Waking Up
Through their first 12 games, the Lady Lions were averaging just over three runs per game. In its last eight, the team is averaging 7.4 runs per contest. In five of those games, the team has collected 10 or more hits, after only reaching that mark once in the first 14 games
Timely Hitting
In the sweeps of Baker and MidAmerica Nazarene, Lindenwood hitters hit .358 with runners in scoring position and an even better .378 with runners on.
Missing Bats
Lindenwood ranks 24th in the nation in batters struck out per game with a 6.5 average.
Aubrey Moss individually ranks 21st in the nation in batters struck out per nine innings with an 11.7 average.
King of the Hill
Heidi Schertzer continues to be the Lady Lion's best pitcher. She leads the team in ERA (2.73), wins (5), shutouts (2), and fewest walks with eight. She is second on the team in innings pitched with 41 and has struck out 40 batters.
Hot Corner
First basemen
Caitlin Diesen has been on a tear of late. She has logged a hit in five of the last six games she has appeared in, including three multiple hit games. Diesen drove in three runs last week and scored seven times while hitting .615.
Foreshadowing
The Lady Lions are 8-1 when leading after five innings, compared to 0-9 when trailing or tied with their opponents after five.
Scouting Avila
Avila is currently 3-5 on the season and will open conference play against Lindenwood.
The Eagles are led by Jennifer Elliot who is first on the team in hits (6), RBI (4), and homeruns (1). Bailee Testorff is the team's top pitcher with a 3.73 earned run average.
Kylie Williamson is in her first year as head coach for Avila.
Scouting William Jewell
The Cardinals, who play Evangel before meeting Lindenwood, are just 1-5 in their last six games.
Amanda Storm is the team's top player. She has a team-high 21 hits and 14 RBIs, and a 3.02 ERA on the mound.
The Cardinals are coached by Dustin Combs.
Scouting Spring Hill
The Badgers have rattled off six straight wins to bring their record to 12-13 on the year, and will play four games before meeting Lindenwood.
Spring Hill is led by the duo of Ersy Pacheco and Monica Zeringue. The two have combined for 52 hits, four homeruns and 25 RBI.
The Badgers are led by Alison Sellers who is in her fifth year at the school.
Scouting Mobile
Mobile is 21-10 on the season and will be the second ranked opponent Lindenwood will face this year.
The Lady Rams rank sixth in the country in earned run average with a 1.40 mark. Mobile pitchers are striking out an average of 8.1 batters per game and allowing just 4.1 hits per contest.
Offensively, Mobile is averaging better than five runs per game and is third in the NAIA with 60 doubles.
Terri McCormick is in her third year at her alma mater where she was a three-time NAIA All-American.
