The Lindenwood softball team is more than happy to be leaving Alabama. The Lady Lions were swept for the consecutive second day, this time by 25th ranked University of Mobile. Lindenwood lost 10-2 in game one, and the Lady Rams won game two 4-3 in their final at-bat.
Lindenwood got off to great start in game one when
Samantha Van Pelt led the game off with a single. The next batter,
Danielle Merli, doubled to center field to score Van Pelt and the Lady Lions would hold an early 1-0 lead.
It would not last for long, however, as Mobile exploded for six runs in the bottom half of the inning. A pair of errors fueled the explosion and Lindenwood starter
Cassondra VanDyke was chased after just one inning.
Sophia Galati doubled in Merli in the third to cut the deficit to 6-2, but Mobile would add two more runs in both the fifth and the sixth to run-shorten the contest.
VanDyke suffered her first loss of the season, and both Galati and Meril posted two hits and a RBI. Mobile finished with 15 hits compared to six for Lindenwood.
Game two was a much closer affair. The Lady Rams took a 1-0 lead in the second with back-to-back doubles, but Merli and
Jessica Long both had RBI singles in the third to put Lindenwood ahead 2-1.
Mobile would come back and tie the game in the fifth, but once again, Lindenwood responded.
Katie Wessel reached base on an error by the Mobile left fielder to lead off the sixth.
Jacqueline Riordan pinch ran for Wessel, and scored two batters later on an error.
Mobile rallied once again in the bottom half of the sixth, and evened the score at three. In the seventh, the Lady Rams got a double to lead off the inning, and three batters later, Mobile's Erica Bracey singled home the game winning run.
Heidi Schertzer took the loss, surrendering all four runs on ten hits while striking out three.
Lindenwood (12-14, 6-2) will play Central Baptist this Thursday.
