Storyline
The Lindenwood softball team will look to break out of its recent mini slump this week with a pair of non-conference doubleheaders.
The Lady Lions struggled in the state of Alabama last week, failing to record a victory against Spring Hill and No. 25 Mobile.
Lindenwood will wrap up its Spring Break trip on Thursday with a doubleheader against unbeaten Central Baptist, and will conclude the week hosting Harris-Stowe.
Last Week's Results
Lindenwood stumbled last week after winning six of its last eight games.
The team swept Avila, 3-1 and 16-0, to open the week.
Aubrey Moss pitched a complete-game one hitter in game two, and
Danielle Merli and
Sophie Berman each had three RBIs in the blowout.
The Lady Lions then traveled to Mobile, Ala. for doubleheaders against Spring Hill and No. 25 Mobile. Unfortunately, the team came away empty-handed.
Spring Hill swept Lindenwood, using a combination of solid pitching and timely hitting.
The Lady Lions fell 5-3 in game one.
Rebecca Peddicord took the loss, surrendering all five runs on six hits.
Miranda Schlosser posted a pair of hits to lead the Lady Lions at the plate and
Bailee Winkler added two RBIs.
Moss did all she could to keep the Lady Lions in game two, but the team lost in extra innings 2-1.
Caitlin Diesen's two out RBI single in the top of the seventh evened the score at one.
In the eighth, Lindenwood failed to advance its courtesy runner, and it took Spring Hill just two batters to score the game winner.
Moss went the distance, scattering nine hits over 7.1 innings while striking out seven
Against 25th-ranked Mobile, the Lady Lions looked overmatched in game one, falling 10-2 in six innings.
In game two, the Lady Lions owned a 3-2 lead after the top half of the sixth, but the Lady Rams would score once in the sixth to tie it, and won the game 4-3 on a walk-off single in the seventh.
Heidi Schertzer was saddled with the loss, allowing all four runs while striking out three. Merli and Diesen each collected an RBI.
HAAC POY
Aubrey Moss was named the HAAC Softball Pitcher of the Week on Monday. She did not allow an earned run in two starts last week. Moss picked up a five-inning, complete game win during a 16-0 victory over Avila. She allowed just one hit, allowed no walks, and struck out nine. Versus Spring Hill, Moss took the loss despite another strong performance. She allowed two unearned runs and struck out seven in an extra innings setback.
Streaking
Danielle Merli was hitting just .235 after the Evangel series. Since then, she has raised her average to .328, posting 12 hits in the last 10 games while driving in nine and scoring nine runs.
Missing Bats
Lindenwood ranks 36th in the nation in batters struck out per game with a 6.0 average.
Aubrey Moss individually ranks 36th in the nation in batters struck out per nine innings with an 10.7 average.
Running Into Trouble
In its first 15 games of the season, Lindenwood recorded 29 stolen bases. In the 11 games since, the Lady Lions have tallied just eight thefts.
Slumping Bats
The Lady Lions are hitting just .202 at the plate in their last four games compared to .291 on the season.
Slick Fielding
Lindenwood ranks 19th in the country in fielding percentage with a .963 average. That mark is also tops in the conference.
Extra Innings
The Lady Lions are 0-2 this year when playing in extra innings. The two losses came against Columbia and Spring Hill.
Scouting Central Baptist
Central Baptist is a perfect 30-0 in its first season at the NAIA level.
The Lady Mustangs have remained undefeated on the year behind dominant pitching and a powerful offense.
Central Baptist averages 9.5 runs per game, and have scored 10 or more runs in over half of it's contests. The team is led by a trio of girls who have combined for 37 homeruns and 139 RBIs.
Christen Kirchner leads the team in homeruns with 14, and is tied with teammate Carly McLennan for a team-high 49 RBIs. Cassie Martin has gone deep 13 times on the year and driven in 41 runs.
On the mound, Central Baptist features a pair of dominant arms. Jessica Bock and Casey Hammons are both 15-0 on the season and sport ERA's of 1.00 or less. The two have also combined for 15 saves. Hammons has complied 166 strikeouts on the year, while Bock has walked just two batters in 77 innings pitched.
Central Baptist is led by third year head coach Jason Anderson who is 94-22 in his short time at the school.
Scouting Harris-Stowe
The Lady Hornets, who will play Culver-Stockton before meeting Lindenwood, are just 1-5 in their last six games.
Offensively, Harris-Stowe is led by Chanese Witt who has complied a team-high 16 hits. Marylin Oquendo is the top run producer with eight RBIs. Rachel Spurgeon is second on the team with six.
Sami Lightfoot and Jenna Walter are the team's workhorses on the mound. Both have posted ERA's under two and have combined for five wins.
Tony Moody is in his fourth season as head of the Harris-Stowe softball team.
Up Next
Lindenwood resumes conference play next week. The team will first travel to Culver-Stockton before coming back home to host William Jewell. The next 10 games will be against HAAC foes.
