Storyline
The Lindenwood softball team winds down the conference slate this week as well as the regular season.
After collecting five HAAC wins last week, the Lady Lions enter the final week with the regular season crown up for grabs. Lindenwood trails MidAmerica Nazarene by one game in the standings. The Pioneers have already finished league play, posting a record of 17-3. Two wins against Missouri Valley this week would give the team a share of the regular season crown, a feat that has not been accomplished by a Lindenwood squad since 2002.
Before traveling to Missouri Valley on Saturday, the Lady Lions will host Maryville on Senior Day to close out the home portion of the schedule.
Last Week's Results
Lindenwood saw its winning streak come to end last week, but the Lady Lions continued their late season surge with five more victories.
The team opened the week by sweeping Central Methodist.
Danielle Merli's RBI single in the fifth inning held up as the Lady Lions won game one 1-0.
In game two, Lindenwood used a five-run first inning to fuel a 6-3 victory.
Chelsea Landeck and
Jessica Long both drove in a pair of runs in the win.
Benedictine snapped Lindenwood's 12-game winning streak in game one of a doubleheader, but the Lady Lions salvaged a split by taking game two.
A six-run third inning doomed the Lady Lions in an 8-3 loss. Merli collected four hits and a RBI.
Caitlin Diesen delivered the knockout punch in the second game. Trailing 2-1 in the fourth, she belted a three-run home run to put Lindenwood up 4-2, and the Lady Lions would go on to win 4-3.
The power theme would continue against Graceland the next day.
Sophia Galati smacked her fifth home run of the season in a 4-1 win in game one. She also added a RBI double and
Aubrey Moss notched her 10th win of the season on the mound.
Jessica Long had a two-run shot and and Galati chipped in with a solo blast to muscle Lindenwood to an 8-2 victory in game two.
Lights Out
Lindenwood starters have posted a 2.08 ERA against HAAC opponents.
Aubrey Moss (1.88),
Rebecca Peddicord (2.16), and
Heidi Schertzer (2.57) all rank in the top 10 in the conference in earned run average in league games.
The trio has accounted for every conference win this year except one, and are holding opponents to a .248 batting average.
All three also rank in the top 11 in the HAAC in total season ERA.
Turning The Corner
After stumbling to 1-6 on the year,
Rebecca Peddicord has turned it around of late. Over her last six appearances she has posted a record of 5-1 with an ERA of 1.53 and 26 strikeouts.
During her first 10 appearances, she complied an ERA of 3.89 with 28 punchouts.
Teeing Off
Lindenwood batters have feasted on HAAC pitching. Lady Lion hitters are batting .333 and the team is averaging 5.8 runs per game compared to hitting .276 and scoring 3.9 runs in non-conference games.
Lindenwood has five players that rank in the top 10 in batting average in league games.
Jodi Urhahn (.483),
Sophie Berman (.452), and
Danielle Merli (.447) all rank in the top five.
Power Surge
Sophia Galati belted two more home runs last week to give her a team-leading six. She had two all of last year. All six home runs have come in conference, the second most by any player in the HAAC. She leads the team in slugging percentage (.529) this year, ranks second on the team in RBIs with 23, and third in runs scored with 19.
Close Calls
Lindenwood is 4-0 in the last four games decided by one run. On the year the team is 5-4 in contests decided by one run.
Hitting Streaks
Samantha Van Pelt is currently on a 10-game hitting streak, which is tied for the longest streak by any Lady Lion this year.
Kimberly Ruth has also collected a hit in seven straight games.
Slick Fielding
Lindenwood ranks ninth in the NAIA in fielding percentage with a mark of .967. That mark is also tops in the conference.
Scouting Maryville
The Saints are 4-2 over their last six games, and are also in the final week of their season.
Maryville features a balanced lineup as all nine starters have collect 10 or more RBIs. Brittany Ponder leads the team in average (.303), home runs (2), and runs scored (21).
Ashley Reed is the top run producer with 15, and Molli Updegraff is the top threat on the basepaths, with 13 thefts.
Caitlin McClintock has logged a team-high 240.2 innings pitched. Three other starters have combined for just 46.2 innings. McClintock is 14-20 on the season with a 3.05 ERA.
Marryville is coached by Melissa Hurley.
Scouting Missouri Valley
The Vikings have struggled of late, dropping eight of their last 10 contests. Missouri Valley has games against Avila and William Jewell before closing out the regular season versus Lindenwood.
Janie Jungermann and Wendy Garcia are the Vikings' top hitter. Jungermann has a team-best three home runs, while Garcia has collected a team-leading 37 RBIs, the third best total in the HAAC.
Jackie Kragel has compiled 14 wins and an ERA of 4.31 on the mound this year to lead Missouri Valley. Jungermann has nine victories and a 3.71 earned run average.
Josh Miller is in his fourth year as head coach for Missouri Valley.
