The Lady Lions ice hockey team avoided getting swept on their home ice on Sunday by coming away with a 3-3 tie against the University of Massachusetts.
Massachusetts was the only team to score in the opening period, getting on the board with five minutes remaining.
The second period was the most action packed part of the game, with UMass scoring a power play goal early. Lindenwood was able to knot things up at 2-2 after two quick back-to-back scores.
Ashley Rebeck was the first Lady Lion to score, followed by
Kyley Engstrom.
Lindewood was able to gain its first lead of the game after a
Lisa Moreau goal seconds into the final period. Massachusetts managed to tie the score five minutes later, and that is how the game ended.
Rebecca Bernet stopped 20 shots between the pipes for the Lady Lions, as Lindenwood outshot Massachusetts 37-23.
On Saturday night, the Lady Lions were narrowly beat out by Massachusetts by a score of 4-3.
The Lady Lions had control for most of the game until late in the third period, when UMass rattled off three unanswered goals to complete a comeback victory.
The first period began with a
Kelsey Talbot goal. UMass tied the score shortly before the first intermission. Lindenwood committed the only penalty in the period.
In the second period, two Massachusetts penalties were given, but the Lady Lions could not convert on the power play opportunities.
The final period was the most exciting part of the fixture, where five goals were recorded. Lindenwood jumped on its opponents quickly after the break with a goal 50 seconds into play. This score was Talbot's second of the game.
Kali Frederick put a puck in the back of the net to give the Lady Lions a two-goal cushion. UMass came back with three quick goals to take the lead with two minutes remaining. Lindenwood could not manage to tie the game.
The Lady Lions outshot Massachusetts by a total of 49-19. Bernet got the start in goal for Lindenwood and stopped 15 shots, but received her first loss of the season.
Brett Lobreau helped out with two assists.
Lindenwood's record moves to 19-2-2 after the weekend series. They will travel to Marquette, Michigan next weekend to face conference foe, Northern Michigan.
