The Lindenwood men's baseball team split its series against William Jewell on Thursday afternoon at Lou Brock sports Complex. The Lions narrowly lost the first game 5-4 in nine innings, and won the second game 7-6.
Game one was a scoreless pitching duel until the sixth inning. The Cardinals got on the one run across the plate in that inning, and tallied three more runs in the seventh. But in the bottom of the seventh, the Lions batted around their order and tied the game at 4-4.
Shelby Anderson hit a two-run double and
Zach Loraine hit a two-run single to supply the runs for the home side, and sent it into extra innings.
In the top of the ninth, William Jewell took the lead on a sacrifice fly, and held on in the bottom half of the inning to give Lindenwood the loss.
The second game began with the Cardinals jumping out to a 4-1 lead after two innings of play. But Anderson led the comeback in the third inning for the Lions, hitting a three-run home run, which was his second dinger in the game. After a successful squeeze bunt by
Carlos Pianetta, Loraine hit a run-scoring double to put Lindenwood ahead by two runs. William Jewell ended up shrinking the lead but the Lions prevailed in the end.
Lindenwood (13-12, 6-2) will host Avila in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Lou Brock Sports Complex.
