Saturday was Senior Day for the Lindenwood softball team at Lou Brock Sports Complex, and the Lady Lions made it a success, completing a sweep of Missouri Valley. Lindenwood had to come from behind in the seventh inning and won 4-3 on a walk-off hit by
Macy Bross in game one. In Game two,
Aubrey Moss threw a one-hit shutout to blank the Vikings 2-0.
In the first game, Missouri Valley scored in the second inning to grab an early 1-0 advantage. But in the fourth inning, Bross hit a double, followed by a
Jessica Long homerun that gave Lindenwood a 2-1 lead.
The Vikings rallied late, scoring two runs in the top of the seventh to go in front. The Lady Lions refused to give in though, loading the bases with only one out in the bottom half of the inning.
Bailee Winkler drew a walk to force in a run, and Bross hit a single through the left side of the infield to drive in the winning run.
Adi Powell got the start and pitched effectively, going five innings, surrendering an unearned run and four hits, while striking out five.
Heidi Schertzer came in for the final two innings, giving up two runs on three hits and striking out two batters. Because the Vikings took the lead in the seventh, Schertzer received the win.
Game two was a pitchers' duel, with neither pitcher allowing a hit until senior
Sophie Berman stroked a single up the middle in the fourth inning. Senior
Aubrey Moss pitched a gem, going all seven innings, conceding no runs and just one hit, while striking out five batters. The only hit for Missouri Valley came with two outs and two strikes on the batter in the seventh.
The Lady Lions scored the only two runs of the game in their half of the sixth inning. Senior
Chelsea Landeck led off the inning with a double into the right-center field gap. Senior
Sophia Galati doubled to drive in Landeck, followed by an RBI-single by
Emily Johnson.
The seniors led the way offensively in game two, as Berman had two hits, including a double off the wall in center, Galati had an RBI-double and a run scored, and Landeck had a hit and a run scored.
The Lady Lions move to 24-20 overall, and improve their HAAC record to 10-4.
