The Lindenwood women's hockey team nearly notched its first victory on Friday night in Mankato, Minn. The Lady Lions scored two third-period goals to tie the game at three, but a late goal gave Minnesota State a 4-3 win over Lindenwood.
After a scoreless first period, Minnesota State scored first 4:33 into the second period. Less than a minute later,
Kendra Broad scored the first goal in Lindenwood's NCAA history with an unassisted tally.
Minnesota State went ahead 3-1 with one more goal in the second period and the first goal of the third. Lindenwood's power play brought the Lady Lions back, with two goals midway through the period.
Kelsey Talbot scored the first with an assist from
Katie Erickson.
Alison Wickenheiser then tied the game at three with a goal with 9:16 remaining. Erickson and Broad assisted on Wickenheiser's goal.
Lindenwood had two more power play opportunities after that, but it couldn't go ahead. That turned out to cost the team when Minnesota State scored the game-winner with 1:49 remaining in the game.
Minnesota State had a large advantage in shots at 53-16, but
Taylor Fairchild continued her strong play in goal for Lindenwood with 49 saves.
The Lady Lions fall to 0-3 on the season with the loss. The same two teams will be in action again on Saturday at 3 p.m.
