Lions Head to Maryville for Non-Conference Game

• Today the Lindenwood Lions will play a road non-conference game against crosstown rival Maryville Saints.

• The Lions head back to the road this weekend after having their 10-game home streak snapped last Saturday against the Pittsburg State Gorillas.

• The Saints are a hot team winning its last five games in a row. The team also has not lost a game at home this season.

• The Lions and Saints have met 17 times and Lindenwood holds a 9-8 edge. The last time the two teams have met was in the 2010-11 season when the Lions won 76-53 at home.

• This season the Lions are scoring 82.0 points a game. That total ranks second in the MIAA.

• This season's roster consists of five seniors and those seniors are leading the way. The group is scoring 56 percent of the team's average points per game.

Alex Bazzell has been the Lions go to scorer so far this season. He has led the team in scoring in five-of-seven games.

• In the second half against Pitt State Bazzell scored his 1,000 career point as a Lindenwood Lion. He becomes the ninth Lion in program history to reach the milestone.

• Senior forward Richie Thompson has been dominating the glass in the early season. His average of 8.4 is the top average in the MIAA.  

• Freshman guard Brandon Marquardt is making an early impact in his first season of college basketball. He is averaging 7.7 points and is 9-for-13 from behind the three point line. The freshman's 69 percent shooting from behind the arc is tops in the MIAA.

Brett Thompson is making his return to the court in 2012-13. After red shirting in 2011-12 due to a knee injury he is back in the Lions lineup. He is averaging 9.0 points and  4.9 rebounds.

• Over the past two seasons, the Lions have seen overtime numerous times. In 2011-12, the team played three overtime games. The team has already played in three over time games. The Lions have a 2-4 record in overtime since last season.

• In all but three games this season, the Lions have shot at least 30 free throws.

• Today's game against Maryville will be the third-of-four games against teams from the GLVC. The Lions are 1-1 so far this season against GLVC teams.

• Through seven games this season, the team's opponents are shooting just 39 percent from the field and 37 percent from behind the line.

• The Lions have shot 59 more free throws than their opponents. When the team shoots more free throws than its opponents, the team is 4-1.

• Lindenwood has outscored its opponents in both the first half and the second half this season. But the second half has been the Lions best. The team has outscored its opponents 303-226 in the final 20 minutes.

• If the Lions hold their opponents to 69 points or less the team is 3-0. If the opposition scores more than 69 the team is 1-3.

• The team's current three game losing streak is the longest since the team lost three consecutive games in the 2009-10 season.

• The 0-2 start in conference play is the first time under Coach Soderberg that the team has lost its first two conference games.

• After playing a season without a conference the Lions will play this year in the MIAA. Lindenwood will play 18 conference games.

• The Hyland Arena floor has been very good to the Lions since Brad Soderberg took over. In his first four seasons, Lindenwood is 43-6 at home.  

• For the first time in school history the Lions have had three consecutive 20 win seasons. All three seasons have been under the watchful eye of Coach Soderberg.

• The Lions return seven of their top eight scorers from last season's squad. The only loss was Kramer Soderberg who averaged 17.9 points.

• The Maryville University Saints host the Lions at home where the team is 5-0. The Saints are off to a great start winnings its first eight of nine games. Maryville has won its last five straight games and are coming off a 66-54 win over Robert Morris-Springfield.

• As a team Maryville is averaging 69.3 points a game on offense and is surrendering just 59.4 points on the defensive side of the floor. The Saints are shooting 48 percent from the field and 38 percent from behind the three-point line.

• Maryville is led in scoring by Asa Toney who is averaging 14.9 points a game. Armon Provo is second on the team in scoring with 14.0 and Gerald Shaw chips in with 11.5 points a game. Myles Jarrett leads the team in rebounding with an average of 5.4.

• Kevin Carroll is in his second season as the head coach of Maryville.
