Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The Lindenwood softball team picked up its biggest victory of the season with a 1-0 win over Tampa, the No. 19 team in NCAA Division II. The win came in the second game of a doubleheader, with Tampa winning the first game by a 4-2 margin.
Lindenwood's victory came in a pitcher's dual in which no earned runs were scored. The game's only run came in the fourth inning. With one out,
Emily Johnson hit a double and she scored one batter later after an error by Tampa's infield.
That run was all the Lady Lions needed with
Heidi Schertzer and
Kendall Ryndak on the mound. Schertzer started the game and went five innings. She allowed just three hits and four walks. Tampa left the bases loaded in the fourth and two runners in the fifth. Ryndak came into the game in the sixth inning and picked up the save. She allowed just one hit and struck out five of the seven batters she faced.
In the first game, Tampa struck early with three runs in the first inning and the Lady Lions could not come back. Lindenwood got two runs in the third inning, sparked by a
Deidre Merli triple that scored
Erin Pietzman. Merli scored two batters later on a two-out single by
Hannah Braun. Tampa answered with a run in the bottom half of that inning, and neither team scored the rest of the way.
Lindenwood is now 3-4 on its young season. The Lady Lions continue their Florida trip over the weekend at the St. Leo Tournament.
