Men's Volleyball Hosts Lindenwood Classic On Friday and Saturday

Storyline
The Lindenwood Lions volleyball team will host its second tournament of the year this weekend. The Lindenwood Classic field includes California Baptist, King, Limestone, Pfeiffer, and Missouri Baptist.

This is the first time that Lindenwood will host this type of field of mostly NCAA Division II and Division II transition teams. On Friday, the Lions match up against the 2011 NAIA National Champions California Baptist. Later that night, the Lions battle King for the second time in program history.

On Saturday morning, Lindenwood has a rematch with Limestone from earlier this season. The Lions will wrap up the weekend with a first-time contest against the Pfeiffer Falcons.

Last Time Out
The men's team hosted Lewis, the No. 7 team at the NCAA Division I-II level. Lewis was the highest ranked team that Lindenwood has faced in program history. The Lions were swept by the Flyers 25-21, 25-19, 25-17.

The Lions were neck-and-neck with Lewis the entire first set until the Flyers capitalized on Lindenwood errors and recorded an 81 percent sideout percentage. The second set was also closely contested by the Lions with the men's team eventually falling 25-19 to Lewis. In the final set, Lindenwood only hit .143 compared to the Flyers .308.

The Lions recorded 35 kills and hit .186 for the match Defensively, the Lions posted 19 digs with Jack Mitchell recording a team-high of five.

Mitchell also led the team in kills with 13 while posting a .296 hitting percentage. Michael Adams recorded seven and JM Plummer tallied six.

Bench Depth
Lindenwood also picked up a 3-0 victory over Missouri Baptist last week with a hand from its bench. Austin Tudor posted 14 kills, seven digs, one block, and an ace. Kevin Schmalzried recorded 13 assists and eight digs.

Senior Leader
Jack Mitchell leads the team in 2012 with 182 kills and 3.19 kills a set. He has led the team in kills in ten matches and has ten double-figure kill matches.

Mitchell has been able to receive a number of sets out of the back row where he has been extremely effective this season. Mitchell is also fourth on the team in total digs with 82.

The Men in the Middle
The Lindenwood middle hitters continue to show progress as they maintain the highest hitting percentages on the team, with Logan Jarus hitting .337 and Scott Siwicki has a team-high of .427.

Series Rematch
Lindenwood has already played Limestone once, winning 3-1 in Gaffney, South Carolina. The scores were 25-21, 21-25, 25-21, and 25-22.

Jack Mitchell, JM Plummer, and Michael Adams were the big three with Mitchell leading with 17 kills, Adams recording 14, and Plummer posting 11.

Series Histories
Lindenwood will be playing against old NAIA rival and 2011 National Champions California Baptist on Friday. This will be the 28th time in program history that these teams have met. The Lions are 6-21 against the Lancers, including a 1-2 record in the National Championship match.

In 2011, Lindenwood lost both contests in five sets to the eventual NAIA National Champions. Prior to that, the Lions had lost 11 matches in three sets, eight in four and two in five. They have beaten the Lancers twice in every category.

The last time the Lions were matched against King was in 2009 when the Lions won the NAIA National Championship. The men's squad recorded a .330 hitting percentage and 47 kills in a 30-16, 30-28, and 30-21 victory.

This will be the first time in program history that the Lions will face the NCAA Division-III Pfeiffer Falcons.

About the Lancers
California Baptist is currently 3-13 on the year suffering losses to several NCAA Division I programs. Aaron McCalmont leads the Lancers averaging 2.96 kills a set while Kristopher Johnson records 2.74.

Head coach of California Baptist is Alan Vince who is in his first season as the interim head coach of the program.

About the Tornados
King is 6-10 on the season averaging 8.02 kills per set and 7.51 digs per set. The Tornados are 2-7 in the month of February and are coming off its most recent loss from Limestone in three straight sets.

Ryan Booher is the head coach of the Tornados and in his third season at King.

About the Saints
The Saints are 6-4 on the year and 3-2 in the Conference Carolinas. Last time Limestone faced the Lions it ended with four-set victory for Lindenwood.

Head Coach of the Saints is Rick Banis who is in his second season for Limestone.

About the Falcons
With a 10-1 record in 2012, Pfeiffer looks to get the first victory in series history against the Lions. The Falcons are averaging 12.8 kills per set.

Steve Bintz is the head coach of the Falcons.
