Box Score The Lindenwood men's lacrosse team fell in its 2012 season opener on Thursday night against Dominican (Calif.) by a 12-5 score. The contest was the Lions' inaugural Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (WILA) game.
The game was close for the first 45 minutes as the Lions trailed just 5-4 after three periods. The Penguins then scored the first seven goals of the fourth period to break the game open. That run included five goals in a five-minute span starting with 8:41 remaining.
Lindenwood outshot Dominican for the game by a 36-32 margin, but only 14 of Lindenwood's shots were on goal, compared to 23 for Dominican. Lindenwood won 16-of-21 faceoffs and successfully cleared the ball 69 percent of the time. Dominican cleared the ball 72 percent of the time and had the game's lone extra-man opportunity goal.
Five different Lions scored in the game with goals coming from
Greg Cameron,
Joe Roy,
Andrew Szczepan,
McNein Hewitt, and
Carter McCracken. The lone assist was credited to
Jordan McKay.
John Pettis led the team with seven groundballs, one more than
Andy Kihn.
Jake Crews and
Dan Ashlock each caused two turnovers, and
Dan Ashlock made 11 saves in goal.
Lindenwood falls to 2-1 on the season. The Lions will go for their first conference win on Saturday with a 3 p.m. game against Notre Dame de Namur, the defending champions in the WILA.
