Softball's Bats Are Cold In Saturday's Losses

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Lindenwood pitching staff was able to slow down one of the top offenses in NCAA Division II on Saturday, but the hurlers could not get any run support. The Lady Lions were swept by Emporia State, the No. 16 team at the NCAA Division II level, by scores of 6-0 and 2-0.

Emporia State came into the game ranked in the top 20 in both hitting percentage and scoring. Lindenwood held the Hornets to just nine hits in the two games, and to 2.56 runs below their season scoring average.

Heidi Schertzer pitched game one and allowed just three earned runs in six innings. She gave up six hits, six runs, walked two, and she struck out two batters. Schertzer did not get help from her defense or offense. The defense made six errors in the game and the offense had just three singles from Erin Pietzman, Alexandra Newcomb, and Alyssa Esperum.

In game two, Adi Powell threw a complete game and did not allow an earned run. She gave up just three hits, two runs, and one walk, and she also struck out two. Both runs came in the fourth inning when an error eventually led to a two-out, two-run single by the Hornets.

Offensively, Lindenwood managed just two hits in the game, a bunt single by Deidre Merli in the third inning and a single by Newcomb in the seventh. Neither runner was able to advance past first base.

Lindenwood falls to 13-29 on the season. The Lady Lions have another nationally-ranked team awaiting them as they face No. 15 Missouri Western on Sunday afternoon.
