Women's Hockey Picks Up Top Win At NCAA Level

Box Score The Lindenwood women's ice hockey team picked up the biggest victory during its short NCAA history on Friday afternoon in Pittsburgh. The Lady Lions earned a 5-2 victory over Robert Morris, the defending CHA Tournament Champions and a team receiving votes in the national polls before Christmas.

Lindenwood won the game by dominating the third period. The Lady Lions scored three times in the period against a Colonials' program that had given up three or more goals in a game just four times this season.

The score was tied at two for the first 12:58 of the final period before Alison Wickenheiser put Lindenwood ahead. The Lady Lions had a five-on-three advantage and Wickenheiser scored from the left of the net with a shot to the top of the goal. Chelsea Witwicke and Brooke Peden each assisted on the goal.

The Lady Lions added an insurance goal just over two minutes later when Alyssa West cleaned up a rebound for Lindenwood's fourth goal. Wickenheiser took the initial shot and Allysson Arcibal also received an assist.

Robert Morris went on the power play late in the game and pulled its goalie for a two-man advantage. The move backfired when Wickenheiser stole the puck and scored on the open net.

Lindenwood was tied heading into the final period thanks to Kendra Broad. She scored a pair of power-play goals just 1:26 apart late in the first period to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead. Jocelyn Slattery assisted on both of those goals, and Kirkham and Katie Erickson also received assists. Robert Morris tied the game late in the second period before Lindenwood rebounded with its performance in the game-deciding third period.

Lindenwood outshot Robert Morris 35-34 for the game. The Lady Lions were three-for-seven on the power play against the Colonials who entered the game fourth in the nation by killing 89.2 percent of their power plays. Fifteen of Lindenwood's shots came on the power play, including 11 in the first period.

Defensively, goalie Nicole Hensley had one of her top games of the season by stopping 32 of 34 shots, including six in the final seven minutes after Lindenwood took the lead.

West, Wickenheiser, and Witwicke all finished the game with a +2, and Rachel Weich, Megan Cox, and Arcibal also had a positive plus/minus.

Lindenwood and Robert Morris will complete their two-game series tomorrow afternoon.
