Men's Volleyball Has Inaugural MIVA Match

Box Score The Lindenwood men's volleyball team opened its 2013 season on Saturday evening at Hyland Arena with a historic match as the Lions played their first competition as a member of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA). Lindenwood faced No. 11 Ohio State and fell by scores of 25-14, 25-22, and 25-22.
 
The Lions never led in the first set but trailed by just one point at 10-9. Ohio State dominated the rest of the set though as it finished on a 15-5 run. Ohio State hit .500 for the set while Lindenwood hit just .152.
 
In the second set, Lindenwood started finding some confidence. Lindenwood led 10-9 when Ohio State went on a 5-0 run to get some breathing room. The Buckeyes would go on to win the set but it took them five set points before pulling out the win.
 
Lindenwood jumped out to an early lead in the third set thanks to a 7-0 run by the Lions. That spurt was led by Tim Schmidt who had four service aces in that span. Ohio State caught up with Lindenwood at 16-16 and the two teams traded the lead several times in the second part of the set. Lindenwood led 20-19 before Ohio State scored three straight points to take the lead for good.
 
Ohio State finished the match hitting .429, compared to .239 for the Lions, as Lindenwood had nine more hitting errors in the contest. The Lions had one more service ace in the match, and Ohio State had four more blocks and two more digs.
 
Colin Hackworth led Lindenwood's offense with 13 kills. He had just two hitting errors and hit .423. Logan Jarus hit .800 for the match with eight kills and no errors on 10 attempts. Schmidt had a team-high 33 assists and Cory Buehler led the Lions with seven digs.
 
Lindenwood and Ohio State will be in action again on Sunday afternoon with a 2 p.m. match at Hyland Arena.
