Men's Volleyball Falls In Five Sets

Box Score The Lindenwood men's volleyball team fell behind one too many times on Tuesday night at Hyland Arena as it lost to Missouri Baptist in five sets. The Lions fell by scores of 23-25, 25-22, 25-22, 20-25, and 15-13.

After the two teams split the first two sets, Missouri Baptist went ahead with a victory in the third set. The Lions led 12-8 early, but they did not score another point off their serve for the rest of the set. Missouri Baptist took the lead at 15-14 and led the rest of the way.

The Spartans had momentum early in the fourth set as they jumped out to an 8-2 advantage. Lindenwood trailed by seven at 14-7 when it made a big run, scoring 12 of the next 14 points. Zach Bequette had two service aces and a kill in that span, and Kyle Overby collected two kills.

In the deciding fifth set, Missouri Baptist broke a 1-1 tie with three straight points, and Lindenwood would never be able to tie the game up. The Lions got within one point at 13-12 and 14-13, but both times the Spartans answered with a kill to clinch the victory.

Missouri Baptist finished the game with a .354 hitting percentage, compared to a .245 mark for the Lions. Lindenwood outblocked the Spartans 9-6, but the Lions still finished with eight more hitting errors. The Lions had eight service aces, six more than Missouri Baptist, but the Spartans collected seven more digs.

Scott Siwicki was Lindenwood's top offensive player with 10 kills and just one error in 15 attempts. Kyle Overby had a team-high 15 kills and Colin Hackworth finished with 13. Tim Schmidt led Lindenwood with 37 assists.

Defensively, Schmidt had a team-high eight digs, one more than Michael Adams. Logan Jarus had six blocks to lead Lindenwood in that category.

Lindenwood falls to 0-3 on the season. The Lions head on the road for the first time on Friday with a MIVA match against IPFW.
