Box Score The Lindenwood women's ice hockey team played one of its most competitive games against a nationally-ranked team on Friday night at the Lindenwood Ice Arena, but the Lady Lions still fell to North Dakota by a 7-3 score.
Lindenwood scored first in the game with a power-play goal just 2:25 into the contest. The team's momentum was stopped a few minutes later though when North Dakota scored three times in a 1:30 span.
North Dakota also scored the first goal of the second period to make it 4-1, but the Lady Lions answered at the 13:27 mark. Lindenwood nearly got within one goal but North Dakota's goalie made a strong save on a Lady Lions shot. North Dakota controlled the rebound and went down and scored for a crucial two-goal swing.
North Dakota added one more goal in the second period and a goal in the third to go up 7-2. The Lady Lions ended the scoring with a goal with just over three minutes remaining in the game.
Lindenwood's first two goals both came off of its special teams. The Lady Lions went on the power play early in the game and scored just four seconds into it.
Alyssa West won the faceoff to
Allysson Arcibal who scored the goal. The second goal came seconds after Lindenwood killed a North Dakota power play. Arcibal was the extra skater returning to the ice and she got a breakaway goal after receiving a pass from
Lyndsay Kirkham. The final goal was scored by
Alison Wickenheiser. Arcibal assisted on that goal for a three-point night.
Nicole Hensley made 53 saves in the game, including 24 in the second period when Lindenwood was outshot 27-7. For the game, North Dakota had a 60-22 shot advantage. Arcibal and Wickenheiser both blocked six shots for Lindenwood and the Lady Lions held North Dakota to just one-for-five on the power play.
Lindenwood and No. 9 North Dakota return to the Lindenwood Ice Arena ice on Saturday afternoon for a 2 p.m. contest. The game will be the final non-conference regular season contest for the Lady Lions in 2012-13.
