Box Score The Lindenwood field hockey team lost to the No. 9 ranked Limestone College Saints Sunday afternoon 4-3 in the ECAC Division II Championship game. The game was thrilling with a stroke-off shootout deciding the champion.
Jill Funkhouser and Rachel Goromonzi scored in the stroke-off to win the championship for the Saints. Lindenwood was unable to make any of its stroke-off attempts.
The Saints jumped out to the early lead with a goal from Rebekah Baker on a one-timer after a pass from Funkhouser. Baker was not finished she scored on a quick blast past goalie
Victoria Gil at the 18 minute mark to put Limestone up 2-0.
Stembeni Zhanda for the Saints scored a few minutes before the half to give Limestone the commanding 3-0 lead.
The Lady Lions came out in the second half with a flurry of shots and momentum.
Victoria Buysschaert scored her third goal of the season after
Carly Brengosz set up a perfect pass. Brengosz dribbled around the goalie and passed Buysschaert wide-open for the Lindenwood goal.
Late into the match,
Karlie Quinn scored to make cut the deficit to one.
After a late foul with five seconds left, a penalty corner from
Kelsey Musson was passed perfectly to
Kristi O'Connor. She then blasted the shot into the net with one second left to send the game into overtime.
Neither team scored in the overtime periods and Limestone scored two shots to none in the stroke-off to win.
The loss dropped Lindenwood to 8-9 and was the final game of the season.
