Box Score The Lindenwood men's volleyball team picked up its first win of the season along with its first victory as a member of the MIVA conference as it defeated IPFW 3-1. The Lions won by scores of 25-14, 28-26, 25-18, and 27-25.
After scoring the first point of the match, Lindenwood would never relinquish its lead in the first set. The Lions jumped out to an 11-6 lead all while capitalizing on five Mastodon errors along with a pair of kills from
Kyle Overby and
Scott Siwicki. The two squads would exchange points through the middle of the set, but at 15-11, Lindenwood scored five straight to give them a 20-11 edge.
Lindenwood hit .467 in the first set while holding IPFW to just a .115 clip.
The first half of set two was a true back-and-forth battle, with neither team gaining more than a three-point advantage on the other. With the Lions up 14-11, IPFW proceeded to go on a 10-4 run that put them up three on the Lions at 21-18. Lindenwood retaliated back, sparking a five-point run of its own that put it up 24-23 off of three errors by the Mastodons, a service ace by
Colin Hackworth and a kill by
Michael Adams. There would be three more ties before IPFW ended the set off a kill by Eddie Rivera.
The momentum from the second set carried its way into the third for IPFW as the Mastodons quickly jumped out to an 8-3 lead. Lindenwood clawed back and found itself tied at 10-all after forcing three more attack errors by IPFW. That change in momentum continued to fall Lindenwood's way as the Lions went on and score nine out of the last 12 points.
Lindenwood jumped out a quick 4-0 lead in the fourth. IPFW mimicked Lindenwood's play in the third set and brought it to an 11-all tie. Both teams continued to exchange leads until the final points as Lindenwood would take the fourth set after a kill by
Logan Jarus and an attack error by Ramon Burgos.
Kyle Overby led the Lions with 10 kills while
Colin Hackworth added nine.
Scott Siwicki recorded eight kills on just 13 attempts with no errors.
Tim Schmidt led all players on the floor with 39 assists.
Lindenwood concluded the evening with a .241 hitting percentage while only committing 18 attack errors. The Lions held IPFW to a .115 clip while forcing 35 Mastodon attack errors. The Lions outblocked IPFW 23-11 in the contest.
The Lions improve to 1-3 on the year and 1-2 in the MIVA. Lindenwood heads to Ball State for a match on Saturday. First serve in Muncie, Ind. is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
