Box Score 2 The Lindenwood Lions baseball team split its doubleheader with Northwest Missouri State on Monday winning game one 7-4, but falling in game two 5-4.
In game one the Lions jumped out to an early lead.
Wade Rothermich led the game off by drawing a walk, would be bunted over on a sacrifice by
Ben Coudret and scored later in the inning from second on an error by the pitcher.
With a 1-0 lead for the Lions going into the bottom of the third, the Bearcats were able to strike back getting three runs on three hits and an error. Lindenwood was able to get out of the inning on a 5-4-3 double play.
The Lions would make a comeback in the sixth inning on a two-out rally. Coudret got on with a walk and would be followed up by a
Mike Failoni homerun to tie the game at 3-3.
Colton Moore would give Lindenwood the lead as he completed the back-to-back home run to make it a 4-3 game.
Lindenwood piled on more runs in the seventh as
Mike Wilson leadoff with a walk.
Kyle Leslie bunted him to second and
Nick Kolley traded places with Wilson.
Nathan Prindle did the same as he hit an RBI double to increase the Lions lead. Prindle would get to third run after a wild pitch which put the Lions up 7-3.
Zac Pearman would surrender just one run in the seventh, giving the Lions a 7-4 win. Pearman threw seven strong innings and only gave up three earned runs in his complete game victory.
In game two the Lions did not get off to a hot start as they stranded three runners in the top of the first and surrendered four runs in the bottom of the inning.
Lindenwood was able to get a run back in the top of the second by way of a Rothermich sac fly that drove in Leslie. The Bearcats grabbed that run back in the bottom of the third to take a 5-1 lead after three innings of play.
The Lions would quietly battle back by getting a run in the sixth as Leslie brought in Failoni on a sacrifice.
In the eighth,
Ryan Light would get on base with a single then
Mike Wilson then executed the hit-and-run perfectly to move Light over to third base. Both runners would later advance on a wild pitch that bought the Lions within two runs.
Lindenwood made one last push to tie the game in the ninth. Rothermich would single with one out and would advance to second on a wild pitch and to third base by way of another wild pitch. Failoni, who had four hits on the game, would come through with a two-out single that drove in Rothermich to make it a one-run game. Unfortunately, for the Lions they could not complete the comeback and fell short by a final of 5-4.
Both
Dalton Woodard and
Austin Klein pitched very well in relief. Woodard threw 3 1/3 innings giving up only three hits and striking out two. Klein would also throw 3 1/3 innings giving up just one hit and striking out four Bearcat batters.
Leslie had a solid weekend with four hits and five RBIs. Failoni only appeared in two of the three games this series but had five hits, three RBIs and added a homerun. Moore had a powerful weekend as he took Bearcat pitches over the wall twice in the three-game series.
With the split on Monday the Lions are now 4-6 overall and with their second MIAA series win they are 4-2 in conference play. The Lions will be in action next on Saturday, March 2
nd in Emporia, Kan. for a doubleheader with Emporia State starting at 1 p.m.
