Men and Women Swim Teams Compete in NSIC Meets

The Lindenwood swimming and diving programs ended their seasons last week at the NSIC Women's Championships and NSIC Men's Invitational meets in Rochester, Minn.

The women's program finished fifth out of eight teams in its first season as a member of the NSIC women's swimming and diving conference. The Lady lions scored 1108 points at the competition. St. Cloud State won the meet with 1724.50 points.

Michelle Bell was named the NSIC Diver of the Year after finishing second in the three-meter dive and winning the one-meter diving competition. The women's team also set six school records. Four individual records fell with Audra Thornton breaking the 100 free mark, Ashton Friedley setting a new mark in the 500 free, Natalie Rembisz breaking the 1000 free record, and Aly Coleman breaking the 200 breaststroke mark. Lindenwood also set two relay records in the 200 and 400 free.

The men's team was runner-up out of the four teams at the meet. The Lions scored 1006 points, just six points shy of the champion, St. Cloud State.

Ramunas Paknys was named the Swimmer of the Meet after winning three individual races and being a part of three first-play relays. He won the 100 and 200 back races and the 200 IM. He was a member of the 200 and 400 medley relays, and the 400 free relay teams. He was also named the Swimmer of the Year among the four teams at the NSIC Men's Invitational.

Lindenwood set 12 school records on the men's side, including Ubaldo Zavaleta setting marks in the 1000 free, 1650 free, and 400 IM. Paknys set school records in the 100 and 200 back, ivars Akmentins set records in the 50 and 100 free, and Cody Friedhoff set marks in the 200 and 500 free. Lindenwood set school records in the 400 medley, 400 free, and 800 free relay events.

Day One Recap
Cody Friedhoff took fourth-place out of 10 swimmers in the men's 1000-yard freestyle race. In the 800-yard freestyle relays, the Lindenwood women grabbed second-place, while the men's team took first-place. 

Lindenwood diver Michelle Bell also finished second out of 11 divers in the women's three-meter dive. 

Day Two Recap
A pair of Lion swimmers combined to take the top two spots in the men's 200-yard individual medley. Ramunas Paknys finished first in the event and teammate Arturs Plots followed him up with a second-place finish. A Lindenwood men's relay team also took first place in the men's 400-yard medley relay

Nufar Zilber finished second in the women's 50-yard freestyle for the Lindenwood women's team. 

Day Three Recap
The Lindenwood men's relay teams continued their success on Saturday by winning  the 200-yard medley relay. Uba Zavaleta advanced to the finals  in the 400-yard individual medley by taking fourth place in the preliminaries, and would improve his time in the finals and finish first overall. Teammate Gilad Brunfman took first place in both the preliminaries and the finals of the men's 100-yard butterfly.

Cody Friedhoff continued his successful weekend by taking first place in the preliminaries and the finals of the men's 200-yard freestyle. Ramunas Paknys also earned a first place finish in winning the 100-yard backstroke

Women's swimmer Ashton Friedley took first place in the B final of the 200-yard freestyle race. Diver Michelle Bell chipped in a first place finish in the women's one-meter dive competition. 

Day Four Recap
Ramunas Paknys' strong tournament continued when he took first place in the 200-yard backstroke. Two races later, teammate Ivars Akmentins won the 100-yard freestyle race. Lions Reinis Rozensteins and Arturs Plots took first and second place respectively in the 200-yard breaststroke. Not to be outdone, teammates Uba Zavaleta (first place) and Gilad Brunfman (second place) did the same in the 200-yard butterfly shortly after that.

On the women's side, Alyssa Coleman took fourth place in the 200-yard breaststroke. Storrie Cramer took second in her heat in the B preliminaries before going on to win B final of the 200-yard breaststroke.


 
The tournaments were the final meets of the season for both teams.
