Hensley Records 90 Saves But Lady Lions Fall In Triple Overtime

Box Score Lindenwood women's hockey goalie Nicole Hensley became the first NCAA Division I goalie to record over 80 saves in a game. The true freshman finished with 90 saves, but Lindenwood fell in triple overtime to Robert Morris (Pa.) by a 2-1 score. The game was the first in a best-of-three series in the first round of the College Hockey America (CHA) Tournament.

Hensley bettered the NCAA Division I record of 78 saves which is held by Desi Clark of Mercyhurst. However, Hensley's record won't officially become the new NCAA mark since Lindenwood is in its provisional year of moving to the NCAA level. Hensley's 90 saves are a new Lindenwood record and also set CHA Tournament records for most saves in a game and most saves in a tournament.

Hensley kept the Lady Lions in the game despite being outshot 92-42. She made 51 saves in regulation and had another 39 saves in over 48 minutes of overtime play. The game was also the longest contest played in the history of the CHA Tournament.

After a scoreless first period, Lindenwood took a 1-0 lead at the 7:50 mark of the second period.  Alyssa West scored the goal with assists from Allysson Arcibal and Alison Wickenheiser.

Early in the third period, the Lady Lions wasted a good chance to go up by two goals when they had a five-on-three opportunity. Lindenwood couldn't score and then committed a penalty after Robert Morris got one skater back on the ice. The Colonials couldn't score during their power play but did get the equalizer just three seconds after the power play ended.

The rest of regulation and 48:04 of overtime became a defensive struggle. The game finally came to an end when the Colonials scored a power-play goal at the 8:04 mark of the third overtime. The goal came 33 seconds into the power play.

Lindenwood finished the game 0-for-nine on the power play while Robert Morris was one-for-nine. There were 138 faceoffs with the Colonials winning 86.

Lindenwood and Robert Morris will play game two of the series on Saturday afternoon in Pittsburgh, Pa. at 2 p.m. (eastern time).
