Box Score 2 The Lindenwood Lady Lions softball team split a pair of games against the Truman State Bulldogs on Wednesday afternoon in St. Charles, Mo. The Lady Lions lost game one 3-1 and completed a thrilling come-from-behind win in game two 8-7.
Both starting pitchers started off game one posting zeroes in the first two innings. The Bulldogs would break through first in the top of the third inning. The visitors then added to the lead in the sixth inning with a pair of runs to extend their lead to 3-0.
Lindenwood threatened in the bottom half of the inning loading the bases with no outs. Unfortunately, for the Lady Lions they were only able to muster one run and fell 3-1.
Alexandra Newcomb and
Kendall Ryndak led the team with two hits each. Ryndak started for Lindenwood and went five innings giving up two earned runs and seven hits.
Game two started with the Lady Lions getting on the scoreboard first with a single tally in the first inning. It didn't take Truman long to answer when the team scored four runs in the next half inning.
The Lady Lions did not go down easy the rest of the way. Lindenwood scored single runs in the fourth and the fifth to cut the lead to one.
Trailing by one,
Lindsay Schroeder led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a single. She was advanced to third on a single by
Courtney Opich. With
Courtney Kitson batting, Opich advanced to second on a wild pitch putting the go ahead run at second. Kitson would strikeout though and it was up to Braun. She would ground out to short but tied the game.
The game headed into the seventh inning tied at four. Truman started off the inning with its leadoff hitter reaching via an error which opened the flood gates. The Bulldogs ended the inning scoring three runs and headed into the home half of the seventh with a three run lead.
Once again, the Lady Lions did not go down without a fight. The frame started with Deidri Merli grounding out to the pitcher for the first out. Ryndak connected on her fourth hit of the game to start the rally.
Kate Keaton was the next hitter and struck out swinging. Now with two outs and only one on it looked bleak for Lindenwood.
Macy Bross extended the game with a single which put runners on first and third.
Alyssa Esperum hit a sharp groundball to shortstop that the Bulldog middle infielder handled but made a bad throw to first. The error brought in one run and put runners at first and third with two outs.
Next up was
Mallory Eitel who singled into leftfield and brought home Bross to get the home team within one run. The tying run was now at second base and the game was in the hands of Kitson. She subsequently ripped a ball up the middle which scored Eitel to tie the score. After the tying run came across, Kitson was thrown out at second trying to get into scoring position.
Extra innings started with the Bulldogs going down in order and giving the Lady Lions a chance for a walk-off win. With the international tie breaker in play, the Lady Lions put Kitson on second base to start the inning. On the first pitch of the inning, Kitson swiped third base with no throw. Braun preceded that with a single into the outfield which gave Lindenwood the win.
Ryndak led the team with four hits while also driving in two runs. Kitson pitched in with three hits and two RBIs and Newcomb also had two hits.
With the split against Truman the Lions overall record 6-8 and a MIAA mark of 1-1. Lindenwood will be right back in action Thursday afternoon against McKendree at home.
