Box Score 2 The Lindenwood softball team was swept by Missouri Southern in a MIAA doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Lou Brock Sports Complex. After losing game one by a 12-0 score, the Lady Lions lost an extra-inning affair in game two by a 3-2 margin.
In the first game, the Lady Lions couldn't contain Missouri Southern's top three hitters. That trio went 10-for-12 with six runs and seven RBIs. The big blow was an eight-run fourth inning that put Missouri Southern up 12-0, and the score remained that for the final 1 1/2 innings in the shortened game.
Lindenwood had just two hits in that contest with a double by
Hannah Braun and a single by
Courtney Kitson.
Lindenwood got on the board early in the second game thanks to a pair of extra-base hits. In the first inning,
Alexandra Newcomb doubled down the left-field line to score Braun. The next inning,
Courtney Opich opened it with a double and she came around to score on a bunt single by
Mallory Eitel.
That was almost enough for Lindenwood starter
Kristen Felker who kept Missouri Southern off the board for 20 outs. In the top of the seventh, Felker was one strike away from the shutout when she allowed a bases-loaded single that tied the game at two.
Both teams had several chances to win the game after that but they couldn't get a run across before the international tiebreaker rule took affect in the tenth inning. In Missouri Southern's half of the inning, it bunted the extra runner to third and scored her on a single. In Lindenwood's tenth inning, it also advanced the runner to third with one out but couldn't get the tying run home.
Felker went 6 2/3 innings and allowed just two runs. She gave up eight hits and seven walks, and struck out four.
Morgan Colvis pitched the final 3 1/3 innings and allowed just two hits and one walk, while striking out two.
Offensively, seven players had hits, including two by Kendrall Ryndak. Braun reached base four times with three walks and a hit.
Lindenwood falls to 9-15 overall and 2-6 in MIAA play. The team is scheduled to play at home again on Tuesday against Illinois-Springfield.
