Box Score The Lions baseball team lost a close game against No. 11 Missouri Western on Sunday by a score of 5-4.
Lindenwood got things started with two outs in the first inning when
Mike Failoni hits a double down the left field line.
Nathan Prindle followed up with a double to drive in Failoni and the Lions had a 1-0 lead.
Kyle Leslie started second inning reaching on a throwing error by the third baseman and it allowed him to advance to second.
With two outs
Ben Coudret hit a single to second base and forced a throwing error. Coudret moved to second and Leslie scored on the play.
The Lions surrendered one run in the fourth but got that one back in the fifth.
Rothermich started off the inning being hit by a pitch.
Zach Kurzejeski hit a double to left field to drive in Rothermich from first, Kurzejeski advanced to third on the throw.
After Failoni was intentionally walked Prindle laid down a bunt attempting to bring in Kurzejeski but he was out at home. Lindenwood could not manufacture another run in the inning but still led 3-1.
Missouri Western had a big sixth inning scoring two runs to tie the game at 3-3.
Kurzejeski stood on first base with two outs. Failoni hit his third double of the game to bring in Kurzejeski for the 4-3 lead.
Lindenwood did not have the lead for long as Missouri Western scored on in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game yet again.
The Lions had
Nick Kolley on second base with one out in the top of the ninth but could not bring him in.
Austin Klein came in to pitch in the bottom of the inning and surrendered an unearned run to take the loss.
Zac Pearman started the game and went 6 1/3 innings striking out three and allowing four runs on eight hits.
Dalton Woodard threw 1 2/3 innings allowing just one hit.
Failoni finished the weekend with five doubles on seven hits and three RBI. Kolley, Prindle, and
Ryan Light finished the three game series with four hits each. Woodard threw four scoreless innings allowing just two hits on the weekend.
The Lions drop to 16-22 on the year and 14-16 in the MIAA. Lindenwood returns home on Tuesday to face Washington University-St. Louis for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. in St. Charles, Mo. at the Lou Brock Sports Complex.
