The Lindenwood softball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday afternoon in St. Charles, Mo. to the Northeastern State Riverhawks. Lindenwood lost game one 10-2 and then 8-6 in extra innings in game two.
Game one of the day was all Riverhawks from the opening pitch. The visitors scored two runs in each of the first two innings to take an early 4-0 lead. Northeastern State then added to the lead in the fourth with three runs and closed out the game with two in the fifth and one in the sixth.
The Lady Lions only runs of the game came in the fifth when Alexander Newcomb hit a two-run home run. Lindenwood was outhit in the first game 10-5 and also committed four errors.
The final game of the day looked like it was going to be all Northeastern State from the early going. The Riverhawks scored three runs in the second and fourth innings to take a 6-0 lead. Lindenwood was trailing by six and had only one hit heading into the team's final at bat. It looked like Northeastern State was going to come into St. Charles and leave with two easy wins.
But fortunately for the Lady Lions, they had something else on their minds. The final frame started with
Courtney Opich popping out to the shortstop. The following hitter was
Kate Keaton who singled to start the rally. Up next was
Morgan Colvis who also singled to put runners at first and third.
Krsiten Felker then hit a sharp ground ball to shortstop which looked like it might be a tailor made double play to end the game. But the Riverhawk's shortstop booted the ground ball and all the runners were safe, including scoring the team's first run.
Now with runners on first and second and one out,
Erin Pietzman singled down the left field line which scored Colvis and cut the lead to four.
Brooke Miller then struck out and the Lady Lions were down to their last out.
Mallory Eitel kept the inning alive with a two-out two-run double which also cut the lead to two.
Danelle Emerick would come off the bench and deliver the biggest blow of the game. On the second pitch of the at bat, Emerick launched a two-run home run over the scoreboard in left field which tied the game. After the home run
Megan Newman struck out and the game headed into extra innings.
Unfortunately, for the Lady Lions the huge comeback went all for not as the Riverhawks scored two runs in the top of the eighth. Northeastern State then held onto the two-run lead in the bottom of the eighth for the win.
After the two losses Lindenwood drops to 19-25 overall and 10-14 in MIAA play. The Lady Lions will be back in action on Wednesday night against Fontbonne in the team's final home game of the season.
