Box Score 1 The Lindenwood baseball team defeated Southwest Baptist in both games on Wednesday by scores of 20-2 and 13-10. The Lions finished their home schedule with five straight victories at the Lou Brock Sports Complex.
The Lions jumped out to an early lead on the day when in the bottom of the first
Ben Coudret singled with one out.
Mike Failoni followed with a single up the middle.
Nathan Prindle put the ball in play and forced a fielding error on the third baseman to score Coudret and Failoni advanced to third.
Colton Moore hit a sacrifice fly to right allowing Failoni to score and the Lions took a 2-0 lead.
Southwest Baptist tied the game in the top of the third and forced the Lions to respond. Prindle and Moore hit back-to-back singles to start the bottom of the inning. Both runners moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by
Mike Wilson.
Ryan Light walked to load the bases. With two outs
Zach Kurzejeski singled to drive in Prindle and the bases remained loaded.
Wade Rothermich hit a single to drive in both Light and Moore as Kurzejeski moved to third.
After Rothermich stole second and Coudret walked the Bearcats changed pitchers. Failoni hit the left center fence for a bases clearing triple to bust the game wide open. Prindle walked and Moore was hit by a pitch to once again load the bases. Wilson hit a double down the left field line driving in Prindle and Failoni. Light walked for the second time in the inning and Moore scored on the passed ball. The Lions scored nine runs on six hits in the inning to take an 11-2 lead after three innings.
Kurzejeski led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk and moved to third on a Coudret double. Failoni hit a sacrifice fly to left field driving in Kurzejeski and moving Coudret to third. A Prindle single scored Coudret and the Lions had a 13-2 lead.
In the fifth, Wilson led off with his second double of the game and scored on a Light double to left center. Kolley hit a single to center driving in Light.
Eddie Sutton came in to pinch hit and reached on a fielder's choice. Rothermich singled and was followed by a Coudret single that drove in Sutton.
Failoni hit a double for his third hit in the game as Rothermich scored to give the Lions a 17-2 lead after five innings of play.
The Lions did not let up in the sixth as pinch hitter
Austin Holtgrieve walked and advanced to second on a
Branden Sugar single. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Sutton singled to drive in Holtgrieve and Sugar moved to third. Rothermich hit a single allowing Sugar to score and Sutton to second. Coudret hit a single to drive in Sutton and the Lions had a 20-2 lead.
Brendan Kleekamp threw six solid innings allowing just two runs on nine hits and struck out seven Bearcat hitters.
Steffen Simmons threw the last inning to help Kleekamp earn his third victory on the year. The Lions scored 20 runs for the fourth time this year and added 21 hits in game one.
Game two started with early runs. Southwest Baptist scored one run in the first and Lindenwood responded. Rothermich led off with a single and stole second. In his attempt to steal third Rothermich forced a throwing error on the catcher and was able to score to tie the game.
Coudret walked and was moved to third on a Failoni single. Prindle laid down a sacrifice bunt moving Failoni to second and scoring Coudret. Moore reached on an error by the first baseman. Both Failoni and Moore advanced one base on a wild pitch. Failoni scored on a Wilson groundout and the Lions led 3-1 after the first inning.
The Lions broke the game open in the bottom of the second when Light and Kurzejeski both walked. Both runners were in scoring position after a double steal and were driven in on a Rothermich single to center.
With bases empty and one out Coudret was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a single by Failoni. Prindle singled to load the bases. Moore fouled out far enough down the right field line to score Coudret and move Failoni to third.
Wilson hit an RBI single allowing Failoni to score and Prindle to third. Prindle scored on a balk as Wilson moved to second. Wilson score on a Leslie single and Light followed with a double to drive in Leslie. The Lions scored seven runs on six hits to take a 10-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth Moore led off with a double off the right field wall and advanced to third on a passed ball. Moore scored on a Wilson groundout giving the Lions an 11-3 lead after four innings.
Kurzejeski led off the fifth with a single and scored on a Rothermich triple to right center. Coudret singled up the middle driving in Rothermich adding to the Lions lead.
Lindenwood held on to win 13-10 in game two. The Lions honored their lone senior
Colton Moore who had two hits on the day including one double and two RBI.
The bats were hot for Lindenwood as eight hitters had three hits or more on the day. Rothermich had six hits on the day including one triple, six RBI, three stolen bases, and four runs scored.
Coudret and Failoni had five hits each. Coudret had one double, five runs scored, and three RBI on the day. Failoni had one triple, one double, five RBI, and four runs scored. Failoni and Prindle have 10-game hitting streaks. Failoni has reached base in 40 consecutive games while Rothermich has a streak of 30 games.
With the two wins Lindenwood moves to 21-22 on the year and 19-16 in the MIAA. The Lions will travel to Topeka, Kan. on Saturday to take on Washburn for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
