Box Score 2 The Lindenwood baseball team jumped out to a great start to the 2014 season beating Christian Brothers 5-3 and 3-2 on opening day in Memphis, Tenn.
The Lions wasted no time getting on the board with a three-run first inning.
Wade Rothermich scored the first run of the year on a balk by the opposing pitcher. Newcomer
Jerry Roam and
Mike Failoni crossed the plate on a
Nathan Prindle double.
Christian Brothers battled back and tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning. Roam would score for the second time in the game on a passed ball to put the Lions up one.
Nick Kolley added a run in the top of the ninth to give the Lions a 5-3 lead and
Matt Meier had a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth for the Lions first win of the year.
Dylan Terrell was dominant on the bump tossing five innings allowing just one run and tallied 10 strikeouts but did not earn a decision.
Brendan Kleekamp and Meier pitched two innings apiece and each had three strikeouts as Kleekamp earned the victory.
Lindenwood did not have the same start in game two as they did in game one but still took the first lead of the game which came in the third inning. Rothermich reached base on a hit-by-pitch and scored off a Roam double to right center.
Freshman
Andrew Kendrick drove in his first collegiate run when he singled to drive in
Ryan Light. Christian Brothers tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning but the Lions responded well.
Zac Perkins also played in his first career game and made a big contribution. Perkins drew a walk and used his speed to steal second base. Rothermich took advantage and drove in the freshman to give the Lions a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning.
Austin Klein allowed two runs in four innings of work with six strikeouts in his first outing of the year but would earn the win. Transfer
Geoff Hartlieb helped close out the game as he allowed just one hit and struck out one batter in two innings.
The Lions are now 2-0 to start the year and will look to stay undefeated on Sunday against Christian Brothers set to start at 1 p.m.
