Box Score 2 The Lindenwood baseball team fell 4-3 and 14-4 to Washburn on Saturday in St. Charles, Mo. at the Lou Brock Sports Complex.
Game one had to looks of another defensive battle early but the Lions had a big fourth inning to break the tie.
Jerry Roam started the inning off with a single up the middle and was followed by a bloop single by
Mike Failoni.
Nathan Prindle singled to left to drive in Roam for the first run of the game.
Kyle Leslie laid down a bunt to the first baseman who attempted to throw out Failoni at third but all runners were safe. The bases were loaded for
Ryan Light and he took advantage hitting the ball through the infield to bring in both Failoni and Prindle. Washburn avoided a huge inning by getting a ground ball double play to end the inning as the Lions led 3-0.
The Ichabods started to chip away in the bottom of the fifth inning as Tanner Johnson hit a one-run triple to make it a 3-1 ballgame. The following inning Washburn had yet another one-run triple this time by Parker Gibson.
Matt Meier came in to relief the starting pitcher
Austin Klein. The Lions looked to escape the inning with the lead but Washburn caught a break when an Ichabod runner reached on an error allowing the tying run to score. Klein allowed three runs on four hits a struck out nine Washburn batters.
Lindenwood could not manage to score a run in the top of the seventh and fell short as the Ichabods had a walk-off sacrifice fly to beat the Lions 4-3.
Game two started off with some fireworks for the Ichabods when Gibson hit a homerun to left field and put Washburn up 1-0.
Senior Zack Kurzejeski came through for the Lions in the fifth inning with a hard hit ball down the third baseline to drive in
Kyle Leslie and a 1-1 tie game. After a
Wade Rothermich walk freshman
Zac Perkins had his second hit of the game and of his career to drive in Kurzejeski giving the Lions a 2-1 lead.
Washburn tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning at 2-2 but the Lions responded immediately. Kurzejeski led the top of the seventh off with a four-pitch walk and advanced to third on a Rothermich double over the right fielders head. Perkins again came through in the clutch with a single to shallow center driving in Kurzejeski to score and both Rothermich and Perkins advanced on the throw.
Failoni put the ball in play allowing Rothermich to beat the throw home to score on the fielders choice. Prindle followed up with a walk and the bases were juiced but the Lions could not follow through with more runs as the Ichabods were able to get three outs in a row and kept it to a 4-2 Lindenwood lead.
Washburn bounced right back with five runs in the bottom of the seventh to regain the lead 7-4. The Ichabods added seven runs in the bottom of the seventh for the 14-4 victory.
The Lions drop to 3-6-0 on the year and 1-3 in the MIAA. Lindenwood will return to action on Friday when they play host to Lincoln at 4 p.m. at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.
