Lions Baseball Drops Two Games on Monday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Lindenwood baseball team finished a four-game series with Northeastern State losing game one 19-10 and game two 9-7 on Monday.

Nathan Prindle started the scoring with a solo homerun in the top of the first inning. Northeastern State responded with a run in the bottom of the first, a grand slam in the second inning, and a six-run bottom of the third including another grand slam to take an 11-1 lead.

Kyle Leslie started a strong fourth inning with a single and later scored on a Wade Rothermich single. Nick Kolley scored on a Jerry Roam single and Mike Failoni singled to right center to bring in Rothermich and Marshall Vallandingham to cut the deficit down to 11-5.

The Lions continued to cut into the RiverHawks lead as Vallandingham hit a two-run single in the fifth inning to drive in Kolley and Leslie. Andrew Kendrick crossed the plate on a Prindle walk and Vallandingham scored on a Failoni sacrifice fly. Rothermich was the final run in the inning on a Ryan Light single as the Lions were down just one run after five innings.
Northeastern State broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning with eight runs for the 19-10 victory in game one.

Game two was another offensive game this time started by the RiverHawks first inning homerun. The Lions immediately earned back the run in the top of the second when Light reached base via hit by pitch. Light stole second and scored on a Vallandingham double to right field.

Lindenwood was able to pick up two more runs in the third off of a Roam double that drove in Rothermich. Prindle singled to left field bringing in Roam and a Lions 3-1 lead. The Lions added one in the top of the fourth but had it cancelled out when the RiverHawks scored in the bottom of the inning. With a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth inning Vallandingham hit a sacrifice fly to center allowing Light to score to make it 5-3.

Again the RiverHawks responded this time with three runs to take a 6-5 lead. With the whole series going back-and-forth the Lions were able to add two runs in the seventh off of a Rothermich solo shot and a Failoni single that brought Roam in to score and the Lions lead 7-6.

With the looks of a series split the RiverHawks posted three runs in the bottom of the eight including a go-ahead two-run homerun to take a 9-7 lead and held on for the victory.

Failoni finished the series with nine hits, one double, one triple, and seven RBI. Roam had nine hits of his own including two doubles, six runs scored, four RBI, and added two stolen bases. Austin Klein was impressive in his six-inning eight-strikeout victory in a series where pitchers for both teams struggled.

The Lions are now 4-12 on the year and drop to 2-6 in conference play. Quincy will visit St. Charles for a 2 p.m. start at the Lou Brock Sports Complex on Wednesday.
