Sugar's Walk-off Beats No. 18 Missouri Southern

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Lindenwood baseball team played host to No. 18 Missouri Southern on Friday winning 5-4 in game one and taking game two by a score of 5-2.

In game one Nathan Prindle got things going for the Lions after he reached on an error.  The sophomore was in a run down before making it to second and again found himself caught in a pickle as he spun away from the tag and made it back safely to second.  After a Failoni walk Ryan Light drove in Prindle from second with two outs and put the Lions up 1-0.

Zac Pearman had a solid start going until he ran into some trouble in the fourth inning with back-to-back walks.  The Lions made two fielding errors in the innings as well to fall behind 2-1.  Missouri Southern added a run in the top of the fifth and another in the following inning.

Light started the bottom of the sixth with a hard hit double to left and was later driven in by Nick Kolley.  Lindenwood could not manufacture any more runs and would depend on the bottom of the seventh.

After Pearman tossed a shutout top of the seventh it was up to the offense to do the work.  Jerry Roam drew a walk followed by a Prindle walk.  A wild pitch put runners on second and third with Failoni at the dish.  The senior hit a laser to right field driving in Roam as Prindle was held at third.  Light then laid down a bunt to the right side of the infield forcing an error on the pitcher and Kruger, who pinch ran for Failoni, crossed the plate to tie the game at 4-4.

In his fourth at-bat of the game and on the year Branden Sugar was at the plate in the bottom of the eighth in a tie ballgame with one out.  Sugar drove the pitch down the left field line that kept going and going and was gone for his first hit of the year that turned out to be a walk-off homerun to upset No. 18 Missouri Southern by a score of 5-4.

Game two started in favor of Missouri Southern right away as Brandon Weller hit a two-RBI triple for the early lead.  Lindenwood got one run back in the bottom of the first on a wild pitch allowing Roam to score.  Zach Kurzejeski drew a walk to start a big inning to the Lions.  Wade Rothermich reached on an error by the right fielder and both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Roam.

With two outs Failoni drove in both Rothermich and Roam with a single to give the Lion the lead.  Kyle Leslie later singled to bring in Failoni and the Lions led 4-2 after three innings of play.  Lindenwood added another run in the bottom of the fourth off the bat Jerry Roam good for a double that drove in Vallandingham for the 5-2 lead and the eventual victory.

Austin Klein threw another great game for Lindenwood pitching a complete game and struck out nine batters.  Klein allowed two runs and three hits in the first inning but allowed just two hits and no runs for the rest of the game and improves to 3-1 on the year.

Lindenwood improves to 6-12 on the year along with a 4-6 MIAA record.  The Lions will complete the four-game series with Missouri Southern on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.
