Lions Sweep No. 18 Missouri Southern

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Lindenwood baseball team completed the sweep over No. 18 Missouri Southern with a win in game one 4-3 and 7-3 in game two.

Game one started off a bit slow for the Lions as they fell behind in the third inning allowing three runs on two hits and two errors.  Lindenwood got one run back in the bottom of the fourth when Ryan Light reached base on a hard hit single.  Light stole second and was able to score on a Nathan Prindle single down the third baseline to make it a 3-1 ballgame.

The Lions continued to cut into the lead in the fifth inning as Kyle Leslie started the rally with a single up the middle.  Mike Wilson hit a single that moved Leslie to third setting up Branden Sugar with runners at the corners and one out.  In an attempt to sacrifice bunt Sugar placed the ball in such a great spot he found his way on via single allowing Leslie to score and moved Wilson to second.

Wade Rothermich reached on a fielder's choice that placed runners at the corners again.  Rothermich showed steal forcing a throw down to second and got in a rundown long enough for Wilson to score before the third out and the Lions tied the game at 3-3 after five innings.

After Dylan Terrell pitched his third shutout inning in relief the Lions were in good position heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.  With one out Marshall Vallandingham hit a double to right center.  Wilson followed up with his second single of the day, this one to left center bringing in Vallandingham for the second walk-off hit in as many days for the Lions.

Lindenwood jumped out to an early lead in the second game and it began in the first inning.  Rothermich drew a walk and advanced to second on a Roam sacrifice bunt.  Light has been on fire as of late as he hit a single to drive in Rothermich for the first run of the game.  A stolen base by Light gave Prindle a chance for an RBI.  Prindle placed the ball in left center for a single and deep enough for Light to cross the plate and give the Lions a 2-0 lead.

The second inning included another two runs for Lindenwood this time it was started by a Vallandingham single and he advanced to second on a sac bunt by Nick Kolley.  Zach Kurzejeski singled allowing Vallandingham to move to third.  Kurzejeski stole second base and Vallandingham timed it perfectly to score on the play.  Roam came up to the plate and hit a single over the third baseman to bring in Kurzejeski and the Lions led 4-0 after two innings.

Failoni started the third inning with a hard hit ball to the right center field wall good for a triple.  Light followed the triple with a single to shallow left field to add another run for Lindenwood.  Missouri Southern struck back in the top of the fourth with three runs on three hits and one error to pull within two.

Lindenwood built on its lead in the bottom of the second that was started by Vallandingham reaching on an error and Kolley reaching on a fielder's choice which Vallandingham was also safe on.  Kurzejeski laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up but Rothermich grounded into a fielder's choice that got Vallandingham thrown out at home.  Roam and Failoni hit back-to-back singles with each driving in a run to give the Lions a 7-3 lead after six innings of play.

Rothermich threw five innings en route to his first victory on the year and a Lions 7-3 victory.  Light and Failoni each hit .500 in the series as Light went 6-for-12 with two doubles and four RBI while Failoni was 5-for-10 with four RBI and a triple.  Lindenwood was 11-for-15 in stolen bases for the weekend.

The Lions improve to 8-12 on the year and 6-6 in the MIAA.  Lindenwood will host Maryville on Tuesday for a single nine-inning game starting at 6 p.m. at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.
