Lions Win Two on Saturday Over Pittsburg State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Lindenwood baseball team won both games against Pittsburg State on Saturday winning game one 6-5 in walk-off fashion and 4-2 final in game two.

In game one the Lions started the scoring in the bottom of the second that was started with a Ryan Light walk.  Light stole second and Nick Kolley hit the ball hard up the middle that bounced off the shortstops glove to put runners at first and second.

Light stole third base and scored after Zach Kurzejeski laid down a bunt and reached on a fielder's choice.  With two outs Jerry Roam hit a double to drive in both Kolley and Kurzejeski for a 3-0 Lindenwood lead.  The Lions surrendered one run in the top of the third but came back with more runs in the bottom of the inning.

Marshall Vallandingham reached on an error and moved to third on a Light double.  Kyle Leslie hit a gap shot to bring in both Vallandingham and Light for a two-RBI double.  Pittsburg State scored two more runs in the top of the fourth and again added two runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 5-5.

The Lions again made magic in the final inning of the game started by a Kolley single.  Kurzejeski laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Kolley to second and Kyle Kruger came in to run for the catcher.  Wade Rothermich singled to shallow right allowing Kruger to move to third base with just one out.  Roam grounded out to short for the second out but allowed Kruger to score the winning run to give Lindenwood the 6-5 win to start the doubleheader.

In the second game Lindenwood jumped out to an early lead starting in the first inning.  Roam hit a single and moved to second on a Mike Failoni walk.  Vallandingham hit a single to right that drove in Roam and both Failoni and Vallandingham advanced on a fielding error by the right fielder.  The Lions added another run in the next inning that began with a Mike Wilson single.  Wilson advanced to second on a Nathan Prindle sacrifice bunt.  Kurzejeski came through with an RBI single to score Wilson and the Lions led 2-0.

Pitt State responded with two runs in the top of the third to tie the game, but the Lions would regain the lead in the bottom of the fifth.  Kurzejeski and Rothermich hit back-to-back singles to start the inning and Roam loaded the bases with a bunt single.  Kurzejeski was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice still keeping the bases loaded.  Vallandingham hit a sacrifice fly to left field bringing in Rothermich and Light hit a single to score Roam for the 4-2 Lindenwood lead.

Austin Klein has been the anchor to the Lions pitching staff and he tossed a complete game allowing just two runs on six hits and struck out three Pitt State batters en route to his fourth victory on the year.  Roam finished the day with four hits, three RBI, and two runs scored.

The Lions move to 13-17 on the year and are now 10-9 in MIAA play.  Lindenwood will look to sweep Pitt State on Sunday for a 1 p.m. start at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.
