Lions Sweep Pitt State

Box Score The Lindenwood baseball team completed the four-game sweep over Pittsburg State with a 9-8 win on Sunday afternoon at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.

The Lions jumped out to an early lead starting with a Wade Rothermich single and a stolen base.  Nick Kolley put the ball in play for a fielder's choice as the Gorillas attempted to throw out Rothermich at third but committed an error and the ball went in the Pitt State dugout allowing Rothermich to score and Kolley moved to second.  Mike Wilson hit a single to drive in Kolley to give Lindenwood an early 2-0 lead.

Lindenwood picked up two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with two outs.  Wilson singled and Zach Kurzejeski followed up with a walk.  Nathan Prindle hit the ball hard to left field for a single and moved to second on a fielding error allowing Wilson and Kurzejeski to score giving the Lions a 4-0 lead heading into the seventh inning.

Pitt State scored two runs in the top of the seventh and had runners on first and second with two outs when Wilson picked off the runner at first base to keep it a two-run game.  Marshall Vallandingham started the bottom of the inning with a single and Ryan Light followed with a hard hit single up the middle.  Rothermich laid down a bunt to the left side forcing the pitcher to make a tough play resulting in a throwing error to load the bases with no outs.

Kolley came through with a big single to score Vallandingham and Light to extend the lead to 6-2 still with no one out.  Wilson placed a sacrifice bunt to the right side allowing Rothermich to score and moved Kolley to second.  Kurzejeski hit a single to put runners at the corners and Prindle hit a single to score Kolley for the final run of the inning giving the Lions a 9-2 lead after the Lions five-run seventh inning.

The Gorillas responded with a huge six-run top of the eighth inning that included four hits, two batters hit by a pitch, and two walks to make it a 9-8 Lindenwood lead.  Rothermich came in to close out the game and shut the door to give the Lions a 9-8 victory and the second sweep over an MIAA opponent this year.

Vallandingham and Prindle had six hits each in the series while Light and Roam each had five hits.  Vallandingham also had a double while Light was a perfect 4-for-4 on stolen bases.  Austin Klein and Geoff Hartlieb were the key pitchers for the Lions this weekend as Klein threw a seven-inning complete game and Hartlieb tosses 6 1/3 innings en route to his first victory in a Lindenwood uniform.

With the four-game sweep the Lions improve to 14-17 this year and now hold a 11-9 MIAA record.  The Lions travel to Warrensburg, Mo. to take on Central Missouri for a four-game series starting at 3 p.m. on Friday.
