Box Score 2 The Lindenwood Lady Lions softball team was swept by No. 13 Emporia State Hornets on Friday afternoon in St. Charles, Mo. The Hornets won game one 7-2 and completed the sweep with a 5-0 win in game two.
Things started off quickly for the Hornets in game one. Emporia State scored a single tally in the first inning to take the early 1-0 lead. Both starting pitchers then settled in and threw up some zeroes. It wasn't until the fifth inning when the Hornets scored four runs to take the 5-0 lead.
Lindenwood finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth with a pair of runs but unfortunately Emporia answered with two of its own in the next half inning.
Courtney Opich led the Lindenwood offense with three hits and a run scored.
Hannah Braun and
Bailey Marshall each pitched in with two hits each.
The second game of the day was a pitcher's duel for most of the game. Neither team could bring a run across until the fourth when the Hornets scored one.
Lindenwood threatened in the bottom of the sixth when it loaded the bases with just one out.
Madison Huot would hit into a 1-2-3 double play which ended the game. Emporia added some insurance runs in the seventh inning with four runs.
Diedre Merli led the offense with two hits.
Kendall Ryndak started for Lindenwood and went six innings giving up four runs on seven hits.
The two losses dropped the Lady Lions to 18-27 overall and 10-14 in MIAA play. Lindenwood will be right back in action Saturday afternoon against Washburn.
