The Lindenwood women's hockey team dropped a non-conference matchup to the Ohio State Buckeyes, 3-2 on Saturday night from Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo.
Opening the first period, each team was held scoreless for the first 11:01, until Buckeye forward Maddy Field put Ohio State ahead, 1-0. Assisting on Field's goal were Katie Matheny and Alexa Ranahan. Ohio State would carry the 1-0 edge into the first intermission.
Ohio State struck again at the 8:42 mark of the second period, growing their lead to 2-0. Just over five minutes later, the Lady Lions roared back with a goal of their own as
Shara Jasper tallied her second goal of the season, bringing the score to 2-1.
Sarah Bobrowski and
Shannon Morris-Reade were credited with the assists on the Lindenwood goal. Shortly after the Lady Lions goal, Curtis picked up her second goal of the evening, providing the Buckeyes with a 3-1 edge. With just 43 seconds remaining in the period, Field was awarded a penalty shot, following a Lindenwood delay of game penalty.
Nicole Hensley stood tall in net and turned the attempt away, sending the Lady Lions into the locker room trailing, 3-1.
Early in the third period, while on the power play
Rachel Weich scored her first-career goal, edging the Lady Lions closer, 3-2.
Carrie Atkinson picked up the lone assist on the Lindenwood power play goal. The Lady Lions threatened throughout the remaining minutes in the third period, but were unable to tie the game, ultimately falling 3-2.
Between the pipes for Lindenwood,
Nicole Hensley turned in 25 saves, while allowing three goals. In net for the Buckeyes, Alex LaMere recorded 16 saves, while allowing two goals.
"I thought we responded well from last night, we came out flying and hopefully we start getting rewarded for our hard work" said Coach Spencer regarding the Lady Lions performance on Saturday night. "For the second straight weekend we had some bad bounces go our way, but hopefully the hard work begins to pay off in our games next weekend."
In defeat, Lindenwood moves its season record to 0-4-0. With the victory, the Buckeyes improve their season record to 2-0-0. The Lady Lions will return to action on Friday night from Durham, N.H. as they take on the University of New Hampshire Wildcats.
