Lady Lions Lose Heartbreaker in Season Finale

Box Score A goal with less than five minutes remaining in the second half doomed the Lindenwood's women soccer team Sunday afternoon as they dropped the regular season finale, 4-3, to Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, Mo.

Northwest Missouri came out firing on its senior day. Not wasting any time, the Bearcats netted a pair of goals within thirty seconds of each other just six minutes into the match. After re-grouping, the Lady Lions controlled the rest of the half getting several opportunities of their own. In the 27th minute, Becky Roberts dribbled the ball 40 yards down the field by herself squeezing past several defenders in the process before blasting a shot just passed the goalkeeper to cut the Bearcat lead in half.

Still reeling from the momentum, Lindenwood's Jackie Lindner took a free kick that found Kristin Brewer in the box before she flicked it to Kat Roe, who knocked the ball in to tie the match at two apiece just before halftime.

10 minutes into the second half, Autumn Olendorff found an opening in the middle of the box and passed it to Alexis Robbers, who scored her team-leading sixth goal on the season. Carrying a 3-2 lead for the next 30 minutes despite giving the Bearcats several chances down the stretch, the Lady Lions' defense broke committing a foul in the box giving Northwest Missouri a penalty kick. Crystal McElhose took advantage and tied the match 3-3 with just five minutes remaining.

Déjà vu then ensued. Just 38 seconds later, the Bearcats took possession of the ball and sent a through ball to Anna Holden, who knocked in the deciding goal to give the Bearcats a 4-3 lead with four minutes left before the final whistle. The Lady Lions were unable to get another opportunity to tie the match, and were left in defeat in the regular season finale.

With the loss, Lindenwood end the regular season with a record of 5-9-4, and 3-6-2 in the MIAA, just outside of the conference tournament picture.

Alexis Robbers scored six goals, leading the team, while Kristin Brewer led the Lady Lions with three assists.
