The Lindenwood women's hockey team opened their 2015-16 campaign on Saturday afternoon with a thrilling overtime loss at the hands of the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs, 4-3 from Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzille, Mo.
The Bulldogs came out firing in the first period, sending 20 shots on goal and scoring twice. The first Minnesota Duluth goal came at the 7:04 mark of the period, and was followed up at 18:25 with another goal. The Bulldogs went into the locker room at the end of the period up by a score of 2-0.
In the second period,
Shannon Morris-Reade scored the first goal of the Lady Lions season and the first goal of her career on the power play with 12:10 remaining in the period. Minnesota Duluth answered just over four minutes later with a goal of their own, stretching their lead to 3-1 at the end of the second period.
Although the score remained 3-1 for much of the games third period, the Lady Lions refused to go away quietly. With 4:03 remaining in the third period,
Sarah Bobrowski brilliantly assisted
Shara Jasper on a two-on-one break, bringing the Lady Lions within one goal, 3-2. Late in the period with goalie
Nicole Hensley pulled for an extra attacker, Bobrowski received a pass from
Holly Dietzler and sent it into the back of the net for game-tying goal with 17 seconds remaining. In overtime, Bulldogs captain Ashleigh Brykaliuk scored the game-winning goal with exactly 1:00 remaining, giving Minnesota Duluth a 4-3 victory.
Between the pipes for the Lady Lions, Hensley registered 36 saves. In net for the Bulldogs, Kayla Black tallied 25 saves. In the end, Lindenwood finished the game with 28 shots while Minnesota Duluth wrapped up play with 40.
When asked about his teams' performance following the game on Saturday afternoon, Head Coach
Scott Spencer said, "I'm very happy with how our girls competed and battled today. They showed that 'never quit' attitude that we expect with our team. We will need to build on the things we did well and limit those early season mistakes. I am excited to see how our group responds tomorrow."
Of additional note for the Lady Lions, senior defenseman
Brooke Peden played in her 100th career game for Lindenwood.
The Lady Lions will return to action tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. as they again host the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs from the Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo.
