Game Recap: Field Hockey (Discontinued) |

Field Hockey Breaks the School Record With Its 11th Victory

The Lindenwood field hockey team won a big road game on Saturday against ECAC-rival Limestone by a final score of 2-0, which marks as the Lady Lions' school-best 11th win. The victory came in the revenge variety after the Saints had defeated the Lady Lions 4-2 back on October 2 at St. Charles, Mo.

During the majority of the first half, the Lady Lions dominated possession of the ball as they only allowed four shots and no corner attempts to the Saints. Two of the Saints' shots occurred in the first four minutes of the half that were both saved by Skylar Starbeck.

The Lady Lions collected three corner opportunities within the first 12 minutes, but only converted one shot by Bridget Hoogendijk that was saved at the 11:01 mark. They continued to hog the ball away from the Saints when they garnered three more corners until they eventually scored at the 25:02 mark. Greta Banholzer found a pass dished from Graycen Dave that led to the ice-breaking goal for the Lady Lions.

For the rest of the half, both teams exchanged a shot while the Lady Lions came up with an additional corner. That corner led to a pass to Tara Robben at the 34:08 mark who fed to Nicole Johnston. Johnston zipped through the goalie for the Lady Lions' second goal of the game.

Tara Robben played aggressively to begin the second half of play when she shot twice in the span of a minute. One was blocked that led to another corner attempt. Hoogendijk and Noor Fons each took a shot at the goal, but both went wide.

Amelia Rodriguez initiated a corner at the 50:39 mark that nearly translated into a goal for the Lady Lions when Johnston fielded the pass and lasered it towards the goal. A Saints defender arrived at the right place at the right time to deny the Lady Lions from  their third goal with a block. The sequence continued when Banholzer bounced around defenders to find herself one-on-one with Saints' goalie Tabria Cochran. Cochran impressively saved Banholzer's offensive press and kept the Saints from digging a deeper hole.

The Saints earned a gold opportunity to score at the 56:54 mark, but Starbeck fended off forward Marina Jozokos to keep them off the scoreboard. The Lady Lions immediately responded with a gliding group of midfielders carrying the ball to the offensive side of the field in a matter of seconds. Robben almost completed the fast-break play, but Cochran held the fort down with another save. The ball rebounded towards Victoria Buysschaert who then slapped it back at the goal only to be blocked by a Saints' defender.

That was the last real aggressive shooting from the Lady Lions even though they accumulated two more shots going wide. The Saints had their chances to claw their way back with four corners in the last six minutes of the game. They managed just two shots that were not close to the goal as the Lady Lions collected the avenging victory.

Once again, the Lady Lions outshot and gathered more corner attempts than their opponent. They have recorded more shots in 12 of 14 games played and more corners in 10 games this season. Robben's assist guided her to a team and ECAC-leading 34 points on the year. Banholzer now ranks fifth in the ECAC with seven goals and fourth with 19 points. Starbeck has taken part in all six shutouts this season for the Lady Lions, but this was the first time she competed in all 70 minutes. She reduced her goals-against-average down to 1.44 on the year, which ranks third in the ECAC.

After the victory, Lindenwood improves its overall record to 11-3 and a conference-leading 5-1 in the ECAC. Bellarmine and Limestone both trail the Lady Lions by one game in conference play. The Lady Lions will face another road challenge against Newberry on Sunday at 10 am CT.
