Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The Lady Lions softball team got back to action Saturday morning in Rosemont, Ill. for the Rosemont Dome Tournament. In the first game, Lindenwood threatened late, but fell to Ashland by a score of 3-1. In game two, Wayne State put a crooked number on the scoreboard three times to take the victory 10-2.
Game OneAshland led off the game with a two-strike liner down the line, but Marissa Caraballo was caught trying to snag the extra base at second and left fielder
Madison Huot threw a rocket to
Madeline Bohr for the opening play of the game. Fountain then induced two ground balls to get out of the inning. A couple fly balls were all the Lady Lions could handle in their half of the first, and went down 1-2-3.
Ashland didn't waste time with another hit with the leadoff hitter of the inning, as first baseman Jen Moore launched a homer to left field to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Shelbie Prince hit a one-out single over the head of Bohr, but a popup and groundball ended the Ashland inning.
Alexis Theis walked to lead off the Lady Lions' second after falling behind 0-2. Designated player
Maria Tippit sacrificed her to second, and an error by the third baseman off the bat of
Caitlyn Touchette put runner on first and third with one out. Unfortunately, a delayed steal attempt to get caught in a rundown by Touchette failed to work as Theis was thrown out at the plate. Fountain struck out to end the inning with Touchette stranded on second.
Ashland led off the third with another single, and a sacrifice bunt moved her into scoring position. After a walk, Ashland flew out to right field, and Moore grounded out to first to end the threat with two on base.
Alexandra Newcomb nailed a one-out triple over the center fielder's head to give Lindenwood itself another runner on third with less than two outs. Ashland starter Brittany Flanigan forced Theis and Tippit to ground out to end the Lady Lions chance and maintain the 1-0 lead heading into the fifth.
After a 1-2-3 top of the fifth from Fountain,
Madison Huot hit a ground rule double and Tippit walked with two outs, but a Flanigan caused a
Brooklyn Sisk groundout to end another Lady Lions' chance.
Ashland drew a leadoff walk in the sixth, and then Moore struck again with another blast to deep left field to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead. A single by Kalene Freshour chased Fountain from the game, and
Brooke Miller entered the circle. Miller struck out an Eagle and forced a groundout to end the Ashland sixth.
The middle of the order for the Lady Lions came alive in their half of the sixth. With one out, Newcomb and Theis hit back-to-back doubles to drive in the first Lindenwood run of the game. Tippit then singled to left and advanced to second. With second and third with one out, Flanigan used two groundballs to get out of the threat posed by the Lady Lions.
Because Fountain re-entered to hit in the bottom of the sixth, Miller was out of the game.
Kaitlyn VanHooser came in relief and shut down the Eagles in order to give Lindenwood its final chance. Huot and Sisk led off the frame with a walk and single, respectively. Pinch-hitter
Faith Koffron struck out and
Adele Linderman reached on a fielder's choice to give Newcomb a chance to do some damage with runners on the corners and two outs. On a 0-1 pitch, Newcomb roped one down the left field foul line, well over the 210 fence mark, but sailed foul. Two pitches later, the senior grounded out to the reliever Abbie Sgro to end the game 3-1 in favor of Ashland.
Game TwoStill looking for its first win of the tournament, Lindenwood sent
Morgan Colvis to the circle vs. Wayne State. The first inning was rocky for the righty as three singles, a pair of groundballs, and a walk brought in three runs for the Warriors with one out. Colvis retired the next two hitters on a fielder's choice and groundout to third.
The senior carried that momentum in the next couple innings, retiring the next six hitters, including two strikeouts.
Rebecca Stocker would lead off the bottom of the third with a single up the middle, but would be stranded at first the rest of the frame.
Colvis returned to the circle looking to continue to deal. After a leadoff strikeout, Wayne State's Hailey Lazarek bunted for hit down the third base line. After the bunt, the Warriors recorded three more hits before Jade McGarr grounded into a fielder's choice. Newcomb was late getting to second base, however, and everyone advanced safely. Wayne State got another run on a groundout to Newcomb at shortstop, but Colvis forced a groundout to Touchette at third to end the inning.
The Lady Lions weren't able to get any offense going as Mackenzie Boehler retired the next nine after the Stocker single in the third. After Colvis stranded a runner in the top of the sixth, Touchette singled to left field to lead off for Lindenwood. Sisk followed with a single up the middle, and Newcomb brought home the second run of the inning two hitters later with a single of her own. The Lady Lions scored twice, while leaving one on base, to head into the seventh trailing 6-2.
The Warriors put runners on first and second with nobody out. They would go get those two runs back quickly on three straight fielder's choices and another single. A bad bounce at second base gave Wayne State two more runs and a 10-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Boehler would complete the game after sending Theis, Huot, and Stocker down in order.
With the pair of losses, the Lady Lions fall to 2-11. They close out the Rosemont Tournament tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. against host Lewis.
