The Lindenwood softball team played host to Missouri-St. Louis on Wednesday at Lou Brock Sports Complex, and fell to the No. 6 team in the country 8-0 in game one and 11-0 in game two.
Bethany Fountain surrendered consecutive singles to start the game. After a foul out, Fountain struck out Serena Olson and forced Alicia Shivers to popup to
Taylor Scott at shortstop to end the threat. Scott led off for the Lady Lions, and worked a walk, but that was all for the home team.
The Tritons had back-to-back singles again to lead off the second, but Fountain quickly got two outs. On a 2-1 pitch, Erin Walker drilled a double just over the out-stretched glove of
Madison Huot to score two for the visitors. Walker came around to score after a Reagan Osborn single to give UMSL a 3-0 lead after two innings.
After a scoreless third inning for both sides, the Tritons tacked on a run when Ryan Logan went around the bases to score on a wild pitch. After four innings, the visitors held a 4-0 lead, while starting pitcher Hannah Perryman had only surrendered a walk.
Fountain forced a groundball and lineout for two quick outs in the fifth. After a walk, the Tritons used a double, single, and homer to score four runs and give UMSL an 8-0 lead.
With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Huot blooped in a double to right field to break up the no-hitter. The Lady Lions couldn't muster anymore baserunners to attempt the comeback and fell 8-0 in game one.
In game two, four straight singles and an RBI-groundout gave the Tritons an early 4-0 advantage. UMSL scored five more over the next two innings, including a double from Olson and a triple from Erin Walker.
Rebecca Almus relieved
Kaitlyn VanHooser in the top of the fifth after UMSL had four straight hitters reach base. Almust forced two groundouts and a popup after allowing three to score to bring it to the bottom of the fifth down 11-0. Perryman, who also started game two, got
Maria Tippit to pop up to begin the fifth, and pinch-hitter
Shelby Sharpe and
Kourtney Bunselmeyer struck out to end game two by an 11-0 score.
With the pair of losses, the Lady Lions fall to 7-23 on the season. Lindenwood will host Missouri Western on Friday in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
