The NCAA had its pre-qualification diving meet today to determine who will compete for a national title, and three from Lindenwood will move onto the national stage. Schyler Hohenberger will represent the men's team, while Carleen Wayne and Shelby Werkema will represent the women.
Wayne and Werkema finished in 11th and fifth, respectively, in the 1m dive to automatically qualify for nationals. Because of their qualification in the 1m, both divers receive the opportunity to also compete in the 3m dive.
The top nine for men automatically advance to nationals, but 18 different divers move on. Hohenberger finished 12th in the 1m dive, and he will get the chance to compete in the national meet. Because he's moving on in the 1m, he also gets to compete in the 3m.
This will be Wayne's second time qualifying for nationals after she finished 13th in the 1m and 22nd in the 3m as a freshman. Werkema will be competing in the national meet for the second time, and the first since she was a freshman when she finished 10th in the 1m and 14th in the 3m. Hohenberger has now qualified for the national competition three years in a row. He was an honorable mention his first two years, placing 15th in the 3m dive as a sophomore and 13th in the 1m as a freshman.
The women's 3m competition begins tomorrow at 2 p.m. and the 1m is scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m. The men's 1m will begin Thursday at 2 p.m., and the 3m will wrap up at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
