Women's rugby posted a 3-2 record in the Elite bracket to take third place at the Atlanta 7's Festival April 8-9 in Cartersville, Ga.
After an opening round 24-5 loss to Life University, the Lady Lions rebounded with a solid 50-0 victory against Ohio State on Friday. In the opening match of the day on Saturday, Lindenwood built a 14-7 halftime lead against Harvard, but gave up 17 unanswered points in the second half to fall 24-14. That knocked the Lady Lions out of Cup contention, but they still had a shot at third place. Lindenwood defeated Texas A & M 55-0, setting up a rematch for third place. The Lady Lions duplicated their effort with a 39-0 win over the Aggies to get the job done.
Lindenwood also entered a second "Grey" squad in the Competitive bracket and that team went 4-0 to win the division. After an opening round victory against Life, the Lady Lions stopped Kansas State 22-12. A 44-0 shutout of Lee University advanced Lindenwood to the title match where the Lady Lions stopped the Running Eagles once again 15-10.
Head Coach Billy Nicholas praised the effort of the Grey team.
"They really backed each other and it resulted in some positive outcomes," he said. "Our intention was to come here and continue to grow and learn, and that's what happened. It was a great festival tournament for our teams."
He also noted the opportunity to watch the World Series 7's stop for the USA Eagles.
"Supporting the National team is really important to us as a program. The girls really had a blast watching International rugby over the weekend."
Lindenwood returns to 15's play with a quarterfinal game against Life University in the USA Rugby Elite 15's Playoffs. The opening kickoff is set for 12 p.m. in State College, Pa.
