The Lady Lions suffered a six-inning defeat at the hands of Lincoln in game one of the doubleheader at Lou Brock Sports Complex, but regained composure quickly to win game two 9-1 in five innings.
Game OneAfter singles by
Maria Tippit and
Caitlyn Touchette in the first were wasted, the Lady Lions scored a pair in the bottom of the second.
Rebecca Stocker singled to lead off the inning, and
Alexis Theis followed with a double to left-center.
Madeline Bohr worked a walk to load the bases with nobody out, but
Taylor Scott grounded into a fielder's choice after five consecutive foul balls. After
Brooklyn Sisk walked to score Stocker and Tippit singled to score Theis, the inning was over with a 2-0 Lindenwood lead.
The Blue Tigers would get those two runs back quickly in their half of the third. Back-to-back singles by Hope McLeod and Jessica Wolken preceded a Taylor Nienhueser double to score both to tie the game at two apiece.
For the second straight inning, Lindenwood loaded the bases with no outs when
Alexandra Newcomb reached on an error, and Tippit and Theis both recorded their second hit of the contest. Consecutive groundouts by Bohr and pinch-hitter
Faith Koffron, followed by a lineout by Sisk ended the threat.
After
Morgan Colvis sent down the Lincoln lineup in the fourth, the Lions added two more to the board.
Madison Huot hit her team-leading 11th double of the season, and two batters later Touchette knocked her in with a triple to left field. Newcomb hit a sacrifice fly to score Touchette and make the score 4-2.
McLeod singled to lead off the fifth, but with one out Colvis committed an error to put runners on first and second. A single by Macie Kinsey drove in one before Spencer Silva lined a double to right-center field to tie the game. Another hit by Lincoln chased Colvis from the game, as
Payton Wilson came in relief. After walking in a run to make the score 7-4, Wilson got a foul out to third to end the inning.
Bohr hit a dribbler for a hit and Scott walked to lead off the fifth, and moved up a base from a Sisk sacrifice bunt. Consecutive groundouts by Huot and Tippit would end the threat as the Lady Lions stranded two more runners.
The Blue Tigers broke the game open in the top of the sixth by scoring six runs. Two more walks by Wilson caused
Rebecca Almus to come in relief. Consecutive liners up the middle scored two, and after striking out Lauren Stamp, Almust surrendered three more singles to bring in four runs for Lincoln. Heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Blue Tigers led 13-4.
Pitcher Madison Ragar forced three fly outs to left field to end the game in six innings.
Stocker and Theis ended with three hits apiece, while Tippit and Touchette recorded two each. With the loss, Colvis falls to 4-12 on the year. As a team, the Lady Lions left eight runners on base.
Game TwoLindenwood put a crooked number on the scoreboard immediately in game two. Huot reached on an error with one out and came around to score on a Tippit liner up the middle. After Theis reached on a fielder's choice and Tippit moved to third on an error, Stocker walked to load the bases. A wild pitched scored Tippit, and then Touchette doubled home a pair to make the score 4-0. A Newcomb single to give the Lady Lions their fifth run of the inning before Bohr grounded out.
Starter
Bethany Fountain used seven pitches in the top half of the second to get the Lindenwood offense back to work. Fountain led off the inning with a poke to right field, and moved to second on Sisk's second sacrifice bunt of the day. A Huot strikeout and a diving play by McLeod in center to rob Tippit would end the inning with the Lady Lions still ahead 5-0.
The Lady Lions took advantage of an error by Lincoln left fielder Danielle Vaught with one out. Starting pitcher Sarah Westhoff threw a wild pitch to score Stocker before Bohr hit a triple down the left-field line to score Touchette and give Lindenwood a 7-0 lead through three innings.
Lauren Stamp drilled a homer to left field to get the Blue Tigers on the board in the fourth to end Fountain's streak of retiring eight of the past nine.
The Lady Lions would get that run back plus another in the bottom of the fifth. Theis singled to lead off the inning, but it appeared she would be stranded after consecutive groundouts. However, pinch-hitter
Faith Koffron and Bohr hit back-to-back doubles to bring the score to 9-1 and end the game after five innings.
Bohr recorded a pair of knocks in game two, while Fountain improved her season record to 4-11 in her five-strikeout performance.
The split brings Lindenwood to 9-33 on the season and 6-16 in the MIAA. The Lady Lions travel to Jefferson City, Mo. tomorrow afternoon for a twin bill against Lincoln in a non-conference matchup that begins at 1 p.m.
